I recently attended a talk at my university's alumni association where a contracted career counseling service described career counseling -- the counselor pointed out that her staff are all certified counselors, and that their practice is on par with MFT (marriage/family therapist); however, career counseling are not licensed while MFT's are. I don't know how much of this is true, but it is something I think needs to be addressed in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.40.176.143 (talk) 15:35, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

job-search programs for the unemployed[edit]

Are include the job-search programs for the unemployed?.

Preparedness of clients for career counseling[edit]

I just took out the statement "Typically when people come for career counseling they know exactly what they want to get out of the process, but are unsure about how it may work." which was part of the introduction.

First of all, this is not true. There is no evidence of this statement: Many people seek career guidance and counseling because they feel completely helpless, or because they are pressured to do so (e.g. by parents or public administration). Secondly, the content of this statement is only of particular interest - not general information that should go into the introduction of this topic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jkatsarov (talkcontribs) 17:48, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Coaching?[edit]

Is this topic intended to cover career or job coaching?--A12n (talk) 15:55, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't at the moment, but my feeling is that it should cover career coaching as there is significant overlap between training, accreditation and practice for career coaches, advisors, counselors and guidance practitioners. Possiblymaybeme (talk) 20:58, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Apprenticeships and Traineeships - removed[edit]

I have removed this text as it was not relevant to the theory or practice of career counseling. Possiblymaybeme (talk) 21:02, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"An apprentice or trainee enters into a formal training contract with an employer. An apprentice or trainee spends most of their time working and learning practical skills on the job and spends time undertaking structured training with a registered training provider of their choice. The employers job is to assess the skills of the apprentice or trainee, and decide when they are competent in all areas. After completing an apprenticeship or traineeship, they are rewarded a nationally recognised qualification.

School based apprenticeships are offered for those who are still in school. Generally the school based apprenticeship involves attending school three days a week, spending one day at a registered training organisation, and one day at work. A full-time apprenticeship will allow the student to leave school before reaching the school leaving age."

Merge proposal[edit]

Please use this space to discuss the proposed merge of Employment counsellor into this article. Pinging @Transient-understanding:, who initiated the proposal. Joyous! Noise! 21:33, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The material in "Employment counsellor" appears to be a subset of what is in "Career counselling", without going into more detail or explaining what makes an employment counsellor different from career counsellors in general. Transient-understanding (talk) 23:35, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
