substantive translation issues[edit]

This article was translated directly from the Portuguese wikipedia article of the same name Capitania de Pernambuco, and it's barely readable. I suppose the Portuguese text of the original letter was sufficiently dialectical that it had to be transliterated into modern Portuguese below. Translating both into English probably wasn't the right thing to do. I'd propose that the original Portuguese of the letter be retained here, possibly in a footnote, and a readable English translation inserted into the text of the article. map irrelevant[edit]

The map shown is from 1789; the grant was in 1534, and it was essentially a horizontal line north, and the Sao Francisco river south. The map is useless.Sbalfour (talk) 03:31, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've deleted it.Sbalfour (talk) 03:59, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

contradiction[edit]

The grant letter and text following don't include the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, and Paraíba. The territory of these states was later acquired by expansion, but we don't mention that explicitly.Sbalfour (talk) 19:19, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New holland[edit]

Somewhere in the contiguous history of this Captaincy, we need to mention its acquisition by Holland (circa 1634). It's an inconvenient and passing part of history, but we are not to be the judges.Sbalfour (talk) 19:42, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Editing related to this subject on the History of Pernambuco page[edit]

This note is to let anyone know that I am entering material related to the the Captaincy of Pernambuco on the History of Pernambuco page. I will likely pay only passing attention to this page as it only has 3 references and I will be pointing to a good many more references. I think their is some good material here but I don't want to try to coordinate my editing and sources with material that is largely unsourced. (I will see if I can look up the 3 sources used for this page.) A particular question I would like opinion/guidance concerning is when should we say the Captaincy of Pernambuco ends. Formally, I would think when the heirs of Duarte Coelho sold their rights back to the crown. Informally, though at the appellation "Captaincy" certainly was used much longer. My knowledge substantially ends at the reconquest from the Dutch in 1654. P2dwight (talk) 13:24, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

suggesting deletion of this page[edit]

Having completed as much of the History of Pernambuco Page as I can (currently anyway), I am returning here to suggest that this page could be deleted. Despite the evidence that no one else is currently following these (or associated pages) I feel I am too new to WP to actually take any action to delete this page, I just think that the Captaincy is just a part of the History of Pernambuco and can be adequately covered on that page.P2dwight (talk) 18:04, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Now having found that the History of Pernambuco article I have been editing is long enough to be a candidate for splitting, perhaps a better alternative to deleting this page is to combine this page with the colonial part of the History of Pernambuco article. probably moving material here from "History of Pernambuco"[edit]

This is somewhat a companion comment to a comment on the History of Pernambuco article. I consider that I have basically finished my work on the History of Pernambuco article. Of course, I expect that I or others will find places where further editing is needed. Likewise, I continue to consider how to split that article. My current thought is to take most of the colonial era material and move it here to the Captaincy of Pernambuco article. This article is sadly deficient in references (one of which I added) and while I recognize a lot of the current article is good, the lack of references makes it fundamentally unverifiable. However, I would expect to move this four to six "paragraphs" from "Portuguese arrival'" to Pernambuco in the late eighteenth century" to this article. It seems that I am the only editor currently interested in Pernambucan history articles. So, despite knowing that I am still a newby editor, I am leaning toward just being "bold" and letting whoever wants to slap me around when I stray to far.22:55, 27 January 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by P2dwight (talkcontribs) Split the History of Pernambuco article by moving the colonial period sections here.P2dwight (talk) 00:00, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
