Suspected areas?

  • Why is that the infected area representation not consistent with other country maps representing confirmed infected areas? Suspicion is not scientific, and what's suspected must have been ruled out by now as no confirmed cases. The map should only show the extent of confirmed infected areas like all other country maps for the pandemic. Don't understand why it has to be different for India!? I am raising this poi

nt as the representation doesn't align with infected maps of other countries. AnjanBorah (talk) 16:13, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

AnjanBorah I see no harm in putting up suspected cases. I Agree that it has to be updated regularly. However, this can be taken up for discussion. Let other editors share their opinion. What are your thoughts, DiplomatTesterMan, Shanze1, TheRichardPinto, Brown Chocolate, Mayankj429? SaiP (talk) 21:00, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
I too feel suspected cases should be removed. After all, eventually this has to be removed as suspected cases could not be life long. I can understand the condition when this was made, at very beginning when their were cases countable on fingers. Also now most media don't mention when suspected case test reports came out to be negative (maybe they report only in local newspaper). Better to remove it now. Brown Chocolate (talk) 04:45, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
I think so too. Shanze1 (talk) 05:02, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Why Extended confirmed protection needed?

The main page for this only has Semi-protection. But this page has Extended confirmed protection. I think that this is too restrictive.Givingbacktosociety (talk) 01:27, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

This was decided by administrator. There were distributive edits by IPs as well as auto confirm users. So at that time it was necessary to put extended confirm protection. This will gonna end on April 10. If you have any suggestion please tell us on talk page. We would edit that. Brown Chocolate (talk) 04:58, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
I suggest to make it Semi-protected. Reason: The common page is Semi-protected.Givingbacktosociety (talk) 05:16, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Graph on Growth Factor OR Graph on Number of Sick people

To get clarity on "spread of the epidemic in India", it will be good to include a graph which shows either "Growth factor" like at link 1. [1] OR a graph like at link 2. "Number of Sick People"[2]. The decreasing numbers on the graph of "Number of Sick People" compared to previous day OR The decreasing numbers on the graph of "Number of New cases" compared to previous day gives the Effective measures on the epidemic at India!

The increasing numbers of this graph will tell us that some more stringent measures to be put in action.Italic text

The decreasing numbers on this graph is directly proportional to our measures effectiveness.Italic text Manchili--195.112.95.126 (talk) 14:37, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Mention about India in WHO press conference

Should we add it? If yes where?

India is a hugely populous country. The future of this pandemic will be determined by what happens to densely-populated countries. It’s important that India takes aggressive action at the public health level, and at the level of society to control, and suppress this disease.

said Mike Ryan, WHO emergencies programme director, said at the organisation’s headquarters in Geneva yesterday(23 March).[1] - Mayankj429 (talk) 10:06, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

State lock downs - dubious

The section on lockdowns claims that most states in India are under lockdown, along with a map. I don't think this is correct. The livemint article misintepreted district lockdowns as state lockdowns. The state lockdowns are being announced by state governments, which are independent of the central government initiated lockdowns (which are what you find on the PIB web site). -- Kautilya3 (talk) 13:05, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

The map is made with different set of sources which you can find in the table of this article. I took state government announcements into consideration. But let me know if you find anything wrong with the map which I can fix. Shanze1 (talk) 13:10, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
I think the term "lockdown" should be used only when people are predominantly confined to their homes. Using it for anything else would be misleading and amount to misinformation. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 13:16, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
I agree. But I think that's what's happening in most states per the regulations as far as I can interpret from these reports. How do you suggest we decide which states are under "lockdown" and which are not? And what do you think about the use of "partial lockdown"? Shanze1 (talk) 13:27, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
I will keep the dubious tag on for now. If it is indeed the case that something like 700 million people have been confined to their homes for ten days, this is earth-shattering and the sources are too weak to explain it. (For instance, why did the state governments extend beyond what the centre has ordered? What discussion, debate, analysis informed this?) The paucity of the information is quite disturbing! -- Kautilya3 (talk) 14:05, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Agreed. Guess we'll have to wait and see what actually happens and then fix the section accordingly. Thanks. Shanze1 (talk) 14:25, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Well. It is clear now. The PM has announced a complete lockdown and ordered stay at home.[3] I think the map serves no purpose now. Shanze1 (talk) 15:05, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, the PM has trumped the states. But the paucity of information is still the same. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 22:59, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Please, let we note that the PM has provided a basic list of essential services will remain open during 21-day nationwide lockdown.[4]
I think it may hopefully integrated into the WParticle.Micheledisaveriosp (talk) 18:33, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I understand that essentials like groceries will be available. But is it clear how they will reach the people? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 22:57, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Correspondents say it is not clear how - or even if - people will now be allowed out to buy food and other essentials.[5]

-- Kautilya3 (talk) 00:17, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

But Mr. Modi did not make clear how people would get food, water and other necessities during the lockdown, or how they would maintain a safe distance from one another in the cramped spaces where many now live. Nor did the prime minister make clear whether exceptions would be made for workers deemed critical to keep the country — the world’s most populous nation after China — functioning.[6]

Relief package of FM Sitharaman

The current article affirms that "On 26 March, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a package of Rs 1.70 lakh crore to help the poor". I think the article can be improved by adding that "under the scheme, an additional five kilos of rice/wheat will be given to 80 crore individuals -- over the 5 kilo they already get -- along with a one-kilo pulse per household for a period of three months"(sourced by indiatoday.in).

WHO endorsement

Why is this even in the lead. Even Rahul Gandhi has more credibility just now.

The World Health Organisation executive director Michael Ryan said that India had "tremendous capacity" to deal with the coronavirus outbreak and, as the second most populous country, will have enormous impact on the world's ability to deal with it.

DTM (talk) 15:55, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

I went ahead and removed it. Done. DTM (talk) 16:02, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
If discussion needed please do so. DTM (talk) 16:03, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Can you explain what the problem is with credibility? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 18:07, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
What does this have anything to do with Rahul Gandhi's credibility? It is a fact that WHO has stated. I do not think it is a problem according to WP:ARTICLE. SaiP (talk) 19:19, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Linked Michael J. Ryan (doctor). No problems. If the credibility problem has to be explained, then it isn't serious enough. Nevermind. DTM (talk) 14:53, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
  • That quote is taken out of context, and is undue weight at the moment. There isn't a source which discusses India's capacity for dealing with this without also discussing the challenge posed by a large population and a weak public health system. Unless substantive evidence is provided that this does in fact reflect the majority of the sources, I intend to remove this again soon. Vanamonde (Talk) 16:57, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
What context? WHO believes that this is what India needed to do and is supporting it. And the fact that it is supporting is noteworthy. Unless there are other health experts that disagree with the view, I think it needs to stay. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 17:15, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
The context is that every source discussing the pandemic in India discusses the challenges along with the capacity for dealing with the pandemic (if the capacity is mentioned at all). Mentioning one of those in the lead without the other violates our policy on due weight, which I'm not going to both quoting. If you want to add the criticisms of the India response instead, I'm fine with that; but this quote, as currently presented, violates policy. Vanamonde (Talk) 17:29, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
To add criticism of India's response, it has to come from Credible RS to counter WHO. Right? Would it be fine, IF some content is added citing some health experts criticism. Would that balance the due weight as against WHO? Santoshdts (talk) 18:09, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
I think we should add a discussion of the challenges as well. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 18:21, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Yes, precisely. If we have a paragraph in the lead covering commentary about India's response/preparedness, then it needs to accurately represent what reliable sources are saying about the topic, including criticism in reliable sources. Even under those circumstances, the Ryan's comment may or may not constitute due weight, because I haven't found very many sources supporting his position; but it's certainly the only way in which it could be acceptable. Vanamonde (Talk) 18:23, 28 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Here is the source, if everyone here means this [1] SaiP (talk) 13:24, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

  • @Kautilya3: Does that mean that we have to conclude our discussion before 7 days? SaiP (talk) 19:11, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
No, it means that threads that are inactive for 7 days get archived. (I hope that is what it means. Different bots have been handling differently.) If the bot misbehaves we will fix it somehow. But manual archiving shouldn't be needed except in strange situations. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 19:19, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
