Device or protocol[edit]

Is the article about a device or about the protocol?

It appears to be about the protocol, ie as described by [1] and [2]. If that's the case then the article title should be CCID protocol, and the lead sentence should be "The CCID (chip card interface device) protocol is a USB protocol ...". Mitch Ames (talk) 13:03, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That really depends. When I created this page it was a move from a disamb. page and the lead defined it as a protocol so I went with the assumption that that's what the original editor intended it to be. Then another editor (Racksgizmo) created a List of CCID smart card providers. Yet another editor (McGeddon) came and essentially told him to merge it here. So I think at this point it's a bit up in the air, though I'm inclined to lean towards protocol.
As well, "...protocol is a USB protocol" is probably redundant. No need to include "protocol" in both the name and the description, though some rewording might be needed to make that work.
As to the capitalization of "chip card interface device", I've always been taught to follow common convention in the case of naming rather than the style guide you are following, and it seems it is common to capitalize all of the words in the name, even though it isn't a proper noun. That said, the style guide doesn't appear to mention this that I can see so I won't argue it (though I might look it up a bit more tomorrow when I have time).  DiscantX 13:31, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the text to define it as a protocol rather than a device - although I agree that "CCID protocol is a ... protocol ..." is not the best. Mitch Ames (talk) 12:31, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Article should also be renamed - perhaps "interface" would be better (the specs cover hardware as well as protocol). Should we rename it to "CCID interface" (although "chip card interface device interface"?!) ? Mitch Ames (talk) 12:31, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
