Remains[edit]

Hi Dormskirk, more of an FYI at this stage because outside of old OS maps I'm not aware of a good source, but there are surviving remains of the site:

  • To the north of the new co-ordinates, across Westway, is the old Cavalry St bridge, the walls at it's southern end is the northern corner. I think there is a plaque, I'll try to get a photo when the weather is better.
  • Part of Barracks Rd still exists and although again now disused its bridge over the railway is still present (the western of the two), this represents the SW boundary.
  • Also the SE boundary wall and eastern corner partially survives, visible on the map running NNW from the junction of Barracks Rd and Accrington Rd toward Clare Street.
  • I'm less certain about this, but I think one small building may survive next to this wall but I'd have to check.

If I find a decent source for this I'll put it in the article, I think I have one semi-useful book around somewhere for it's early history though. Trappedinburnley (talk) 15:38, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - Many thanks for the additional material. It would be really good if you can get a photo - it would really enhance the article. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 20:40, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dormskirk I feel like I've got a bit carried away and taken over your article. The source had more info than I remembered, one thing led to another, memories stir... The Parliamentary accounts and papers book you found turned out to be very interesting. I think I squeezed almost all I can from Bennett but there are a few elements remaining:
  • There are passing mentions of soldiers being used at Colne in 1819, Accrington in 1920, and Skipton in 1840-3, as the book is Burnley from 1850 it doesn't seem to contain further info. And it doesn't mention the power loom riots at all, which I assumed to be the most well known. As I don't know anything else about them I'm uncertain how reliable it is in this respect.
  • No explanation is given as to why the barracks was empty between 1861 and 65. But as this was the time of the Cotton famine caused by the North's blockade of southern ports during the American Civil War, I imagine there is a story in it. Bennett goes into detail on the effects on the town, not mentioning any violence.
I think some background info should be fairly do-able: I have one other source (Burnley by John Lowe) in which he mentioned an "Armed Association for the defense of the country from foreign and domestic enemies" formed in 1797. He says it was this group who paid toward the construction, and had previously paid for cavalry to visit the town. Also Bennett doesn't expand on the "economic depression" but I assume it will be related to the Napoleonic Wars. Do you know of any sources that may shed further light? I cannot help with further sources, I am afraid, but I think they expansion you are doing is brilliant. Dormskirk (talk) 14:23, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Dormskirk, I'm not particularly familiar with the military terminology so hopefully I've not made any howlers. FWIW these "Armed Associations" seem to be a national thing, thus far largely overlooked on WP. Militia and Volunteers of Northumberland#Volunteers and 1st Surrey Rifles#Traditions has some info. I sense a nice article. Trappedinburnley (talk) 15:35, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Article expansion[edit]

Hi Dormskirk, thanks for the thanks! If you have time to get involved with this article there are a few things you could do. If not this list will remind me to do them later:

  • Bennet cites his sources with the troubles in Colne and Skipton, both of which are available of archive.org (Annals and stories of Colne and neighbourhood by J Carr pp 94, 227-44 & History of Skipton by WH Dawson pp 285-8). I'm in two minds whether to include them in this article as they don't seem to contain much extra info but are freely available at least. However they would certainly be useful to work some links into those articles.
  • The layout section could be expanded using the plan I've used in the infobox as the source rather than the existing map ref.
  • I think this 1893 map could also be used to at least mention that more buildings were constructed.

On the subject of maps this one from 1931 shows that part of the site remained in military use by the Territorial Artillery. I will try to find more info on this, but I wonder if you might have found anything useful while working on Bank Parade drill hall, Burnley? Hi - I think these are all good ideas. On Bank Parade drill hall, Burnley, sadly I did come across any overlap with Burnley Barracks. If I spot anything I will let you know. Thanks and best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 20:57, 4 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
