Isn't this person far more widely known as Burning Spear? What most people would recognize is where we should have articles. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (pseudonyms). --mav

Yes but the name "Burning Spear" was given to the entire group, of which Rodney was the lead singer. Could it be something like the confusion with T.Rex (band name)/Marc Bolan (leader) or Jethro Tull(band name)/Ian Anderson (leader)? Many people think that 60s flute player guy was named "Jethro Tull," but that was a groupRomaC 08:04, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

In the 1970s Rodney had some background vocalists along him, and I've sometimes seen "Burning Spear" used to refer to that whole group. Today however, Burning Spear refers only to Winston Rodney himself. Teklund 09:03, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

I have modified the article somewhat to reflect this but we need more details of the early band and the other members and a bit more about how Spear became Winston Rodney, so in this case you both have a point and I would say we should try to improve the article for clarity on this point. Date of Birth

Sources vary on this - some state 1 March 1945, some 1 March 1948. Given a request from someone apparently close to the subject, I've gone with 1945. Please bear this in mind before changing the DoB in the article.--Michig (talk) 20:04, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Bob Marley or Larry Marshall

This article opens with a counter-claim. Now 1969 is the year agreed on for the issue in hand. Marley released his first single in 1962 so thats 7 years from then that the conversation took place. Please note that they also were both born in 1945 and both came from the same area - so it begs the question why is anyone doubting what Rodney is saying. If you lived in one town or village for twenty years then you grow up with your peers and one of them releases a record in 1962 thats bound to pique your interest. People treat Marley like he was some misty Zarathustra occupying the clouds of the Blue Mountain sipping ambrosia like Zeus until he deigned to honour us with his presence (by that I mean Marley was still local and part of the people and communities he grew up in something I believe was a feature throughout his whole life). He did live in St Ann and Marley was 17 when he released his first single in 1962 left Jamaica until 1966 and returned - released a few successful singles in 1968 (still in Jamaica though his musical activity was centered more around Trench Town) but dissolved that particular release partnership due to no major financial rewards and then that year went to work with Lee Perry when the Wailers success really did start - all around the years 1968 to 1969. West Indians born in the UK all have relatives on the Islands and many of their families still have plots of land. Why do we struggle with the idea that Bob Marley could be walking past Rodney (both same age - both same area) and that Rodney asked him a question to do with music in a casual conversation.

Also Jamaican producers and stuff don't go searching rural Jamaica for musicians - that's rubbish. It has always been - you want to audition you go down to the studio or you approach someone who can arrange an audition. Lloyd Charmers claims it was in a conversation with him so the buck stops here and it does comes across as a chance meeting so my point about searching for musicians is probably not relevant but still useful to bear in mind especially with regards to Rodney's statement. He's from Kingston (born 1938 - so would have been 31 in 1969 when the alleged conversation took place) - Jackie Mittoo was from St.Ann (born 1948) so at least he has a plausible reason to be in St.Ann - so that makes Mittoo younger by 3 years (so he would have been 21 when the conversation took place).

Basically one or the other is right or wrong. I'm for Rodney's statement.

Still I'll leave it in but it really needs to be put to rest.

Removed sentence but left reference in

I've removed this sentence. I'm placing it here though I've left the reference intact since it is probably still relevant to other details.

"Reggae singer Larry Marshall has claimed that he gave this advice while visiting St. Ann's Bay with Jackie Mittoo after being approached by Rodney and that he arranged the introduction."

Reason: the issue here isn't the claim but the unresolved nature of the claim. Any given statement by anyone can be counter-claimed. The question here "is it worthy of inclusion" and "is it essential to the article". Since we don't know if this is spin, personal silliness, momentary lapse of memory or even just an erroneous off-the cuff remark and that no reason can be given for its inclusion with a solid proof of certainty that Marshall is correct and not expressing something in error - I've demoted the "unproved" claim to this Talk Page on the basis that a statement by someone other than the artist does not warrant inclusion if the artist himself (who is still alive and kicking) has spent decades saying the opposite. The right to "authenticity" belongs to the person whom the article is about. Otherwise those legendary "rap battles" that have raged for decades in the US East-West coast rap scene would lead to some very highly dubious articles (and I imagine they have) if we included every claim and counter-claim put forward in rap lyrics and interviews by the "combatants". There is no issue here - the unproved statement is removed.

Please note that this is not the same as a personal statement that is open to questioning. This is a third party claim that is causing the problem: Rodney - (third party claim)? - Coxsone.

Cycling Documentary

Would someone like to argue for keeping the part about a Burning Spear song in a cycling documentary? Doesn't seem like a notable career milestone to me. Skwuent (talk) 20:20, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Since nobody spoke up to argue for keeping the cycling documentary reference I have deleted it from the main article. Skwuent (talk) 18:45, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
