My memories of Red[edit]

Just after university, I moved to Ann Arbor (June 1973). As a 23-year old, I worked with a company called ComShare as a systems programmer developing their time sharing operating system Commander II. I lived not far from the center of town and my local bar was the Blind Pig. They had live music many nites per week, and in the 74-75 days, Monday night was devoted to Boogie Woogie Red. He played solo piano, but was regularly joined by local Ann Arbor musicians.

In mid 74 I started going down every monday night, and after a while, Red ended up coming back to my place to crash - he was way too drunk to drive! On the Tuesday morning, he's spend some time back at the Blind Pig giving me lessons (in exchange for the place to day and food). On several Monday nights, I'd perform a song or two - sometimes with and sometimes without Red. I was not great shakes, but I got polite applause and it really was fun.

In the spring of '75, a few of us took the train to Chicago for the weekend with Red. He took us to some interesting places and we met a number of Chicago Blues artists. It was a very drunk weekend to say the least, but we did hear some great blues.

I left Ann Arbor in June of 1975 to live abroad. I was due to come back to see the folks that Christmas, and was meant to fly in on the last Monday before Christmas - the idea was to arrive in time to see Red. Due to snow, I flew the next day and heard that Red had missed me that night. I never say him again.

He remains one of my heros.
