I'll admit I'm no wikipedia expert, but should this really be categorized as a BDSM article? I think the use of blindfolds in child's games, office parties, and the like, makes it a more innocent item then one would believe by calling it BDSM-related.

One sense is so the category makes sense. But it should have other categories as well. RJFJR 17:05, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't exactly agree on "disambiguation" seeing as a blindfold of all types is to prevent vision, and only the intention. I propose going back to the page Blindfold, merging Blindfold (BDSM) into it as a subsection, and possibly having other subsections for uses (Games, Secrecy, Other). This tends to agree more with other articles of objects (i.e. Glove--"types of glove", etc.) and just makes more sense to me as an encyclopedia article. --Mike Tigas 07:36, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

BDSM[edit]

I see this has been discussed before, but I really can't see any point in having two articles about blindfolds (blindfold and blindfold (BDSM)). The BDSM usage is exactly the same as any other, even if the context is different. Hogtied 12:35, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm against it, since the BDSM application has additional ramifications beyond the simple dictionary definition here, it doesn't seem appropriate to incorporate that. I think the decision from last December 2005 should stand. Merging would also create issues with categorization and dominate (no pun intended) this article with the larger BDSM content. -RJFerret 15:22, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sleep mask[edit]

Effected by the User's Nose[edit]

I was looking to see if there was any mention about the effectiveness depending on the height of the user's bridge of the nose. As an Anglo with a fairly prominent nose bridge I notice that I can usually see through the bottom of most blindfolds making them less effective like in "Pin the tail on the donkey" but most problematic for activities like sleeping where I actually WANT to block sight. On the other hand, my children are half Chinese and the bridge of their nose is a lot closer to the height of the cheekbone and so does not push against the blindfold much at all. In WW2 pictures in France and Italy you see pretty thick material, 4-6 inches to cover the eyes, but like in pictures from Viet Nam and Cambodia in the 60s and 70s you see they use super thin material sometimes looking like cords to tie the eyes making me think the nose might have something to do with the material chosen, the taller the nose the thicker the material needed to be effective. Symbolism[edit]

As the blindfold has long been a powerful symbol for justice, victimisation, denial, depth, trust, foolishness, illusion, senselessness, or unconsciousness, I think there should be a section on this page that references these various symbolic elements. Blindfold symbolism is commonly found in tarot and popular culture. It's also a quintessential part of the Lady Justice statue which symbolises the legal system of the United States of America. Possible copyright issue[edit]

I noticed that the file information for the sleep mask image includes a reference to a website that sells custom sleep masks, where I found copy very similar to that in the "Applications" section of the article (which has been edited since it was added). I think someone might have copied that information here, but it could be the other way around; or perhaps it was added by someone affiliated with that site? Missing application for blindfolds?[edit]

Blindfolds are commonly used both in chess competitions and when solving Rubik's cubes. The article refers to blindfolds being used in children's games but fails to mention their use in more adult but non-sexual pastimes. Blindfoldcubist (talk) 01:51, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
