Auckland, NZ

Has this small town got anything to do with Auckland, New Zealand in terms of name? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.76.39.215 (talk) 14:02, 28 July 2008 (UTC) As far as I can tell the name Auckland in New Zealand comes from Baron Auckland, whose title comes from the nearby village of West Auckland Pit-yacker (talk) 15:09, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

St Andrews Church, South Church

Is St Andrew's not the largest "church" building in Britain, almost to that of cathedral size? I'm fairly certian it is, but don't have a source. I'm going to check, but if you know anyway, please tell me on my talk page! Thanks St91 21:23, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Not sure. Never heard about that before. Although, that doesnt mean it isnt true. Pit-yacker 17:06, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

St Andrew's is 157 feet long and is the largest parish church in County Durham. The largest parish church by area in England is Holy Trinity Church, Hull. That's 285 feet long.

The bible for this sort of query is the famous Buildings of England series edited by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, a scholarly A-Z for each county. Main libraries usually have it, hopefully in the latest edition.

Vinovium House

Does anyone have a source for the claim that a restaurant and roof garden are to be installed there? The claim sounds extremely dubious in my opinion. Pit-yacker (talk) 14:14, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Towards GA

  • What's a "Bishop's borough"?
Do you think a link to History of borough status in England and Wales, possibly with an explanation of boroughs? will suffice?
A link would help and a brief, maybe one sentence, explanation would be great.
I can't find a sourced explanation for this so I thought it best to remove it.
  • Before the Romans controlled the area, Bishop Auckland might have been in the territory of the Brigantes (I think), a Celtic tribe. If a reference could be found, this would be worth mentioning.
I have added some information about Bronze Age and Iron age finds. I haven't found much more.
  • There's nothing on the history of the town from the 13th to the 17th centuries. This is a big gap, and while I understand it can be difficult to find history of this period (often because not much happened) a note should be probably be made mentioning continuity of the town. Otherwise it appears as though that area's been ignored.
I have tried to add a little more in between, particularly around the 17th century and the founding of King James school and the civil war. I realise this now leaves two gaps from 1200 to 1600 and 1700 to 1800 with no substantial coverage. The eighteenth century gap could be filled by a little bit on Richard Trevor's tenure as Bishop. Trevor appears to be one of the more notable expanders of the castle and is probably most notable for the Zurbarán paintings. Whilst, a lot of this is more at home in the Auckland Castle article, it might have some prominence in this article as I believe the Church Commissioners are due to revisit 2001 and 2005 decisions over whether to sell the Zurbarán paintings next year.
  • I think the population information given in the history section would be better if it was brought together under a population change section of the demography section. A good example of how this could be done is here. If you want to take the article to FA, it would be useful in this section to talk about the causes of the population change, just briefly though. Here is a source for the historic population of the town since 1801, I'd be happy to convert it into a table for you.
The source of data appears to be for the whole of Wear Valley. Although Bishop Auckland is the main population centre in Wear Valley, the district covers a vast area, of over 30 miles from the town. Bishop Auckland is also confusingly the postal town for many of these settlements.
Oh, Vision of Britain don't have figures for Bishop Auckland. That's a shame. I've found some figures for the Bishop Auckland urban district, but I don't think they help. Unless the Hutchinson book has some figures, it's probably best to forget it.
Wear Valley is dead but a Vision of Britain haven't updated their site yet.
  • "The second world war offered a temporary reprieve, however, after the war the decline continued." Is this refering to the shrinking population or the declining economy? Or both?
changed to "The Second World War offered a temporary reprieve for the coal industry"
  • At the moment, the history section doesn't really need to be divided.
unified into single section. However, now it is a bit longer would it be better divided?
  • The governance section seems fine to me.
  • The bit about the derivation of the name Gaunless could go in the history section.
Moved
  • The table on the climate of Durham might be queried for its relevance.
Blyth, Northumberland (FA) has a climate box for a weather station which is even further away. Is this likely to be a problem as it probably means the whole climate section would have to go.
  • The demography section seems fine, although I will say that perhaps the population pyramid graph might be better as a line of text, for example "The distribution of ages in Bishop Auckland was broadly in-line with that of County Durham and England and Wales, although there is a slightly smaller propoartion of 20-24 year olds".
added comment but have left graph in place for now.
  • I'm not sure about the relevance of the graph and table in the economy section I'm afraid. Also, could we have something on the town centre or is there any regeneration scheme going on in the town?
I have removed these
  • I like the landmarks section, it's well written and the pictures are good.
  • The cultural reference should probably go with the rest of the information on the castle, a one sentence section rarely goes down well at GAC.
moved
  • Twin towns could be merged into the governance section since it's only one sentence.
moved

I think this article is already pretty good and with a bit more work should sail through GA. I think there's potential to take it to FA in time as well. Good luck. Nev1 (talk) 18:36, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback again. It is appreciated. I have inserted some notes and questions. Could you answer these if you have time please Pit-yacker (talk) 21:34, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm happy to help in any way I can. I've replied to the comments you made. Nev1 (talk) 22:06, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Have also tried to strengthen some of the weaker references, added a religion section and filled in some gaps elsewhere. If anyone watching has time, would be grateful for any further commentsPit-yacker (talk) 16:39, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Nicknames

I have reverted the addition about the use of "Bish-Vegas" as a name. There isn't a problem per se with nicknames being added, the infobox even has fields for these. However, a reliable source is needed that this (or any) name is in widespread use. I couldn't find anything on google beyond the social networking sites. Certainly, as far as I can tell, Bish Vegas is of a much more recent advent, and perhaps less established, than other names such as "Bishop". Pit-yacker (talk) 23:28, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Population

Checking DCC's census site it says Bishop Auckland's population is 24,000 rather than 16,000 Pit-yacker 22:28, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

The 2011 census figure quoted in the article as at 20/9/16 covers a different area to the one quoted for 2011. In fact the population seems to have been *increasing* slightly in recent years.

To be notable by Wikipedia standards, a person has to be discussed in depth in multiple independent, reliable, secondary sources such as newspapers, books or magazines. Having a lot of Youtube subscribers does not mean someone meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline. SpicyMilkBoy (talk) 21:45, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Why JackSucksAtLife (Jack Massey Welsh) should be noted on this page.

I believe that JackSucksAtLife (Jack Massey Welsh) should be on the Notable people section because if you look at the Notability (people) page on wikipedia and look at the basic requirements, it says:

"People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject."

Jack has been in multiple news articles, such as: https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2018/12/12/18136703/fiverr-prank-youtube-venezuela "Search “Fiverr reactions” on YouTube and you’ll quickly bear witness to the fruits of this gambit. Here’s Ricky Dillon, a YouTuber with more than 3 million subscribers, accumulating 500,000 views on a video called “Paying Strangers to Do Weird Things.” Here’s JackSucksAtLife blowing $500 on aimless Fiverr gimmicks, which earned him a whopping 289,000 views." As of 2021 JackSucksAtLife (Jack Massey Welsh) has 2 Guinness World Records and potentially will have a paragraph in the Guinness World Records 2022 book stating he is from Bishop Auckland. This makes me believe that Jack Massey Welsh by 2022 should be in the notable people section of the Bishop Aukland wikipedia

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/watch-out-google-youtubers-are-unionizing/2019/08/14/8aa3e75c-be61-11e9-a8b0-7ed8a0d5dc5d_story.html "Some saw their income fall by 80% after a 2017 change to the rules. Even the prominent YouTuber Casey Neistat, who now has 11 million subscribers, found an apparently uncontroversial Indonesian travelogue was de-monetized. Others have puzzled over the rationale. British YouTuber Jack Massey Welsh, who posts his wacky antics on the channel JackSucksAtLife, revealed last year that clips of himself drinking milk and of someone swearing while playing Minecraft were de-monetized. He said YouTube never explained why."

Or in Additional criteria, in Entertainers: Has a large fan base or a significant "cult" following.

Additionally: "People notable for only one event" is incorrect. Jack has been to a couple (more than one) gaming events for meetups. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Matthyno (talkcontribs) 22:45, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Matthyno thank you for your research and effort to use proper grammar but if i am not mistaken i think "significant coverage" means that he must be the main focus of the article if i am wrong any admin or contributor can correct me — Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.213.186.249 (talkcontribs)
Hi there, thanks for reviewing the notability guidelines and providing sources. Unfortunately, while these sources are reliable and independent, they do not contribute to notability because they are not significant coverage: they only mention the subject in passing. The general notability guideline states: "Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material. The book-length history of IBM by Robert Sobel is plainly non-trivial coverage of IBM. Martin Walker's statement, in a newspaper article about Bill Clinton, that "In high school, he was part of a jazz band called Three Blind Mice" is plainly a trivial mention of that band. In short: a one or two sentence mention is not significant coverage. As for the additional criteria for entertainers, note that Failure to meet these criteria is not conclusive proof that a subject should not be included; conversely, meeting one or more does not guarantee that a subject should be included. While someone might have a large following, if there is not enough coverage of the person in reliable sources for us to write a verifiable article about them, they are not considered notable by Wikipedia's standards. The sources you provided don't tell us any of the information you'd expect to see in a Wikipedia article, like his date of birth, education, career history, or personal life, so unfortunately they don't show that this youtuber is notable. SpicyMilkBoy (talk) 23:02, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
This exactly. A rule of thumb (though I have no idea how good) that I use is: If we can make a non-stub, verifiable article about a person, they're probably notable under WP:NBIO. If we cant, like in the case of Jack, they're probably not notable. Upsidedown Keyboard gonna take my horse... (talk) 23:05, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

I’d say a Youtuber with over 1,020,000 subscribers should be notable enough to be on this page. It’s not like it does any harm to anyone. JackyLaurens (talk) 02:12, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

The consensus is that it is not. Reading Spicy's comment above, you will find that the requirement for notability is the existence of multiple reputable and verifiable secondary sources where the main topic of the article is the person in question. The problem with basing notability off of a number is that when it comes time to create the article, there is no sources to reference, and it becomes another unsourced stub meeting the criteria for speedy deletion. For more reading on the notability policy, I suggest you read WP:NBIO. Upsidedown Keyboard gonna take my horse... (talk) 02:29, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Review of JackSucksAtLife credibility?

I just wanted to ask if its possible he is now more credible now by Wikipedia standards then when this happened in November. Just looking at Google news results, there are quite a few new ones, especially about his receiving of a diamond play button. TømmyHetrick (talk) 05:56, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Still no article, which means he will no be listed. Further questions about this will likely be ignored. Primefac (talk) 11:21, 29 July 2020 (UTC) And for the record, I've merged all of the "Jack" threads together.

Shouldn't Jack be on this page?

He was on a newspaper article and notable people are on newspaper articles.Anilgaming2007 (talk) 22:47, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
