Response: A real good link for you to check out is http://www.yachtsurvey.com/bilge_pumps.htm. Type of battery you use is an important element. There is a lot to bilge pumps. You have to hunt but there is information available on the web. A good start is the link above. Good luck!

Question. I have been using a small bilge pump for about six months. I have it connected to a small batter (motorcycly batter). The pump has been working great until recently it is unable to pump the water up and out of the hose. I have trouble-shooted everything I can think of (checked the hose/pump for clogs or kinks). The batter still has almost a full charge.

If the battery is not "fully charged" will it cause the pump to not be powerful enough.

I have the pump pushing the water up about five feet and until now it has not been a problem for the pump.

What do I need to do?

main point[edit]

Of seems to be neglecting the main purpose of bilge pumps, especially in older days. Ships leaked water significantly, and frequently took on a lot of water during rough weather through waves and the working of the seams. Without a bilge pump, they'd capsize or founder before getting to port. When boats were smaller, they'd bail by hand, but with decked vessels, a pump is required. The other purposes were subsidiary, or for specialized use in certain types of vessels (such as supplying water to preserve fish; that's obviously only for fishing boats), yet the article only makers the briefest mention of it, after discussing the other uses. A bilge pump is used to empty a vessel of water, but it can be used for other things as well; that's what it should say. Oh, and more on the history of bilge pumps would be nice, different forms, how they were operated, etc..45Colt 16:32, 21 January 2016 (UTC) .45Colt 16:32, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
