Year of birth[edit]

A couple websites list his year of birth as 1958! In looking at the edit history, one person decided to change it to 1957 because it said so in a Newsday article! Is Newsday that big a source that it trumps the info credibility of the other websites (ie: imdb.com), or could it be a case of Newsday making an error? Amchow78 06:53, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Remove school link atop page[edit]

Come on. The name of the school is Bernice MacWhatever...obviously some high school kids trying to drain attention from this page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.199.113.62 (talkcontribs) 20:19, March 27, 2007

Sox fan[edit]

i moved the Sox fan reference to the part about him singing at the Cubs game, and added he was at the World Series. GO SOX!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arusnak (talkcontribs) 18:30, May 9, 2007 (UTC)

Frank Catton in Ocean films[edit]

I think his list of notable roles should include his role as Frank Catton in Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.121.104.31 (talkcontribs) 08:40, June 19, 2007

Picture[edit]

Death[edit]

(why is the post chronicle blacklisted)http://www.post chronicle.com/news/original/article_212161769.shtml As of 1 hour ago, he is still alive. So check news reports before posting rumors. Add the two halves of the URL together and you get the source. Silly spam filter. Protonk (talk) 18:09, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

August 9 08 EST ABC News has reported his death in the 8:00AM News

He is dead per Yahoo! News report RIP BERNIE —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.40.143.123 (talk) 13:26, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bernie Mac just died today. --Tony Feld (talk) 16:10, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

Come one...put a relevant image or none at all...Koubiak (talk) 01:26, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. That image would be better for the "hat" page. The purpose of an image for a profile is so SEE THEM. Gutch220 (talk) 15:40, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. You can't even see his face. --70.253.133.202 (talk) 21:04, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming that image is indeed him, it'll serve the purpose until something better comes along. Rob T Firefly (talk) 19:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image is the only user-created image on Flickr that has a Wikipedia-friendly license. There are plenty of apparently user-created images on Flickr, so we can possibly convince a member there to relicense a photo and donate it to Wikipedia? Mosmof (talk) 02:04, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aug 9th death reports[edit]

WABC-TV in New York City states that the Chicago Sun Times has reported Mac's death... as of 7:49 am EDT it is a developing story. Correction--it is confirmed that he is dead. http://www.suntimes.com/1099574,mac080908.article (unsigned)

Yeah CNN has now reported it as a developing story. The confusion is based on reports that he was not critically ill and would be making a full recovery. I think new information will emerge. Maybe the "full recovery" was the hoax.216.240.84.117 (talk) 13:32, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If it was a hoax then it was a pretty good hoax since it appeared on multiple news sites. Schuym1 (talk) 15:47, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The information has already being integrated into the article by myself and a few others. Hurricanefloyd (talk) 12:27, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A couple of different news sites have now DELETED stories that he died. Did some false information get out? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.26.4.233 (talk) 12:58, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, the links just changed. Reported on front page of Sun-Times.Vegaswiki (talk) 13:01, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some editors who apparently do not watch or read current news are attempting to change his date of death to August 2nd and August 5th, please be aware that he officially died in the early morning hours of August 9th, the past dates were rumors. Hurricanefloyd (talk) 13:09, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BBC News also confirmed the speculation, here. UniversalBread (talk) 14:17, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cause of death?[edit]

What did he die of? Cause I can't understand how a person that young could die from pneumonia in a hospital... I think it's more likely he died of heart failure... anyone knows anymore? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.112.157.251 (talk) 17:15, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to WebMD's bacterial pneumonia section, pneumonia is the sixth most common cause of death in the United States and is the top cause of death from infection. Complications include sepsis (blood poisoning), meningitis, and lung failure. So, I think there are several possibilities, other than heart failure. I haven't, however, found any more details about Bernie Mac's case. Noel 17:45, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, it's the sixth most common cause of death, but for a 50 year old male? Pneumonia typically kills in those with compromised immune systems, such as the very elderly. Any chance that Mac had AIDS?Tymothy (talk) 01:47, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I was curious about that myself. But if you look up sarcoidosis, you'll see sarcoidosis and AIDS are at opposite ends of the immune system spectrum. So if Bernie Mac was suffering from sarcoidosis, that meant his immune system was in great condition. Sarcoidosis requires are a strong immune system because it is basically the body attacking itself. Where as AIDS is a weakened immune system leaving you susceptable to HIV and other illness. Certainly his doctors peformed an HIV or AIDS test to determine this. -Spencer,Leon 06:52, 11 August 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Spencer leon (talkcontribs)
That's not quite accurate. Sarcoidosis is an autoimmune disease, but it isn't caused by an overactive normal immune system: it's caused by an overactive abnormal immune reaction. People with autoimmune conditions like MS and sarcoidosis are NOT less prone to infections.
Also, anyone can die from pneumonia. Most people who die from it are old or have compromised immune systems, but "most" doesn't mean "all". I knew a guy in his twenties who was perfectly healthy before dying from pneumonia. Some bacteria don't respond well to antibiotics, and the lungs are among the most delicate structures in the body. Too many people these days assume "most" means "all", or that "rare" means "non-existent". --NellieBly (talk) 22:23, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The wikiarticle says his lung disease was the cause of his pneumonia but it clearly states in the news articles this, "Smith has said the pneumonia isn't related to an inflammatory lung disease Mac also has. That condition has been in remission since 2005." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080808/ap_en_ce/people_bernie_mac_6 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.100.215.45 (talk) 18:32, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted most of the first paragraph related to his death since it was a hoax and malice set of statements which have nor had any citations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.68.150.177 (talk) 12:35, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lets get this right now. Sarcoidosis is not classified as an autoimmune disease because it has no known causes. The granulomas of sarcoidosis are, in most cases, dense-compact and non-caseating which points in the direction that it is not caused by infection. Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous inflammatory disease that can affect any portion of the body. Sarcoidosis is found in the lungs 95% of the time but that does not mean that it cannot or does not spread to other areas of the body. Also: "Pneumonia can be caused by a variety of bacteria, each with their own idiosyncrasies. People with chronic lung disease such as active sarcoidosis, asthma, emphysema or COPD are at higher risk of contracting the disease as are people with diabetes, immune disorders, undergoing recent surgery, smokers and anyone who drinks alcohol regularly." ~Paradox, from inspired.com. Point being, Bernie Mac suffered from Sarcoidosis but it is more likely that his death was the result of a compromised immune system(due to treatment from either prednisone, azathioprine, infliximab or the like-all suppress the immune system) which lead to infection in the lungs(already weakened from the likely scarring and fibrosis) and resulted in pneumonia and died from complications from pneumonia. The specifics of what actually killed him are more than likely never to be known beyond what I just described. Ocean's Fourteen[edit]

How will this effect the development of O14? He was a major player in it, will he be replaced? 209.191.205.44 (talk) 20:54, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What Ocean's 14? All signs point to no movie. Not to mention he could just be left out, since it wasn't in production.--Roneman90 (talk) 21:27, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There will be no more Ocean's sequels, according to George Clooney in 2007. Check out the Ocean's wiki page. RIP Bernie....:( --Doctor Foci Whom 21:28, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tampa[edit]

I removed the reference to Mac having moved to Tampa during his high school years because I haven't been able to find any verification of that. If someone has a specific source for that, they can add the information back along with the source. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 04:33, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of image[edit]

I've removed the image of Bernie Mac from the infobox because it is an incredibly bad picture. It doesn't visually identify the subject, in fact, more than anything, it visually identifies a type of hat. Having no image in my opinion is far better than having a very, very bad one. I kindly ask that anyone discuss the removal here before possible re-adding it to the article. We have an obligation to our readers to present well laid out articles with good images. That image is simple embarrassing. --MZMcBride (talk) 03:21, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly disagree. I think the image is perfectly fine, and the article is much better with it. If you don't think its very good then find a better one. Gran2 18:22, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Eh? How does it visually identify the subject at all? (Link for convenience.) --MZMcBride (talk) 03:58, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Because its evidently a picture of him. I think it's perfectly fine, and I had no trouble telling that it was Mac. Or maybe that's just me. Again, I don't think it should be removed, and again, if you don't think it's good enough then why not try and secure a free license release of a better one? Gran2 19:28, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's a picture of a hat, he just happens to be wearing it. BJTalk 07:22, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Picture again![edit]

It's been nearly nine months since someone else complained about Bernie's pic used in this article. Yet it is still here.

For God's Sake it's a picture of a panama hat with the bottom half of a face showing.

It could be just about anyone!!

It's ridiculous, I would even go as far and say that until a better picture can be found this one should be removed. At least that might prompt an editor to find (with the right to use) a much more clearer and identifiable image. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.132.219.76 (talk) 11:58, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

LOL I just posted and guess what I see that only a month ago, the subject was brought up again.
BTW. I can't believe that someone is actually supporting the use of this image. The only reason I can think, is that it, er, shows an unidentifiable black man. Great sense of respect to Bernie Mac. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.132.219.76 (talk) 12:04, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the image. So instead of just reverting find a better one!! Don't just reuse what doesn't work, and then argue it's merits, find an image that shows the subject's face (and maybe this time, their eyes!!).

I want Bernie back, but lets use an image that a lay person would know and recognise!! Not the one of a sunglass-wearing hat wearer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.132.219.76 (talk) 12:16, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
