Caisteal Dhùnaidh[edit]

The Gaelic form of the name was given as "Caisteal Duuaidh," and this appears in a few websites across the internet. However, Scottish Gaelic has never used repeated vowels, which means that this spelling cannot possibly be correct. On a Clan Fraser webpage (http://www.1066.co.nz/Mosaic%20DVD/whoswho/text/Clan_Fraser[1].htm), we find the following: "Two Fraser war cries have been largely recognized, both in Gaelic. The first, "Caisteal Dhuni" (Castle Dounie/Downie) refers to the ancestral Castle and Clan seat, which once existed near the present Beaufort Castle." This shows that there was an "n" in the original name. A list of original Gaelic placenames on a website linked to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~15007346/modCoimp/stordata.php) gives the correct version as "Caisteal Dhùnaidh" at no. 114 on the list.
