Multiple Source Issues[edit]

Hi Wikipedia, I'm new here so please (gently) let me know if I'm doing all this wrong. This article seems to have multiple issues with its source:

  1. There's only one source.
  2. 80% of the text of this article a direct copy-paste of the source.
  3. The section of the source that discusses this topic is actually an excerpt from a newspaper article by a different author: "(This Article was written by Donald F. Stewart, Director of the Five Fathom Lightship Museum in West Ocean City, Maryland- Copyright 1979 by Donald Stewart.)"

Taking it one issue at a time: I've done some digging and I believe that the Donald Stewart article mentioned was published in The Eastern Shore News on July 19, 1979, but I've hit a brick wall on actually finding that article. Should the citation at the end of this page be changed to reflect this original source, or does the existence and separate publication of this original source need to be verified first?

I'm hesitant to spend more time digging into finding this particular publication because, frankly, there should be better, more authoritative, easily accessible sources to back up this content. I have found very little on this battle beyond short blurbs in Civil War encyclopedias. So I'm throwing this out to the Wikipedia community to see if anybody who has access to better publication databases can find anything good that we can use to improve this article. Thanks! Chincoteague is a place of a lot of oral histories[edit]

Hi folks, Chincoteague chamber is a reliable source as most of their info comes from the local museum collection. A lot of the island's history is told orally or via artifacts and letters from the families who lived here. Many of the source writings are journal entries within the museum collection and have not been digitized as of yet. There are numerous accounts of that day from the towns people who turned out to greet the arriving vessel, only to discover it was not the Union ship they were expecting, panic then ensued until the arrival of the Louisiana, the running battle and subsequent burning of the confederate vessel. The wreck forms the area known as Gunboat Shoals at Wallops island. Exploration of the wreck is not possible because it is within the NASA controlled coastal area of the mid Atlantic Regional Spaceport at Wallops. I will try and get some physical source information to help shore this article up in the near future. 2600:6C60:0:155:38EA:3958:DA83:B483 (talk) 22:14, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
