Pronunciation[edit]

Does anyone know how the name of this family is pronounced? The IPA and the American dictionary spelling say different things. The IPA suggests a two-syllable pronunciation different from the standard pronunciation of this common English name, and the dictionary spelling is at best ambiguous, suggesting a two-syllable pronunciation, but without a vowel in the second syllable. Without knowing anything more, I would suspect this family pronounced their name the standard one-syllable way, but the phonetic spellings suggest there may have been a (full or reduced) second syllable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:42:1:5647:5D9:EB6B:5EFB:F700 (talk) 01:25, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas Bates is not the son of Benjamin Bates[edit]

The Thomas Bates listed who married Caroline Woodson and who is the father of Judge Edward Bates is not the son of Benjamin Bates. These Bates's are not connected with the New England Bates family. They are descended from Jamestown immigrant John Bates, born 1598. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LKBW-KYK 74.75.177.122 (talk) 15:08, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
