BTW, I think that the barrow wights are in fact evil men. Anybody any thoughts?

They were evil spirits, sent by the Witch-king of Angmar. It is very likely that they were indeed the spirits of evil Men, or Orcs, but it is nowhere stated just what spirits they were. The only other occurence of evil spirits of the kind which springs to mind are the spirits sent by Gorthaur (Sauron) to Dorthonion, to drive out the men of Barahir (Beren's father), from the Silmarillion. Agree with above, they were either the enslaved spirits of Men (similar in this to the Nazgul, though of lesser stature, perhaps the victims of a Nazgul's Morgul blade) or some more ancient spirit type, related to those which haunted Dorthonion, or perhaps even those which became Sauron's werewolves and vampires in Angband (though these later were probably Maiar too). I'm skeptical that the Barrow Wights were Maiar as stated by the article, as it is doubtful the Witch King would be able to command them.

wights and frodo

Am I mistaken, or wasn't Frodo said (either by Aragorn or Gandalf)to be in danger of becoming a wight himself after being wounded on weathertop? If so this this would support the morgul blade connection. Lauritz (talk) 03:58, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
