Creation date[edit]

The article follows Burke's peerage, and probably other works on the peerage. Burke states that John de Sutton (died 1359) received a summons in 1342 only. By later usage, this would make him and his heirs barons by writ, but I suspect that was not the contemporary practice, and that the Complete Peerage has applied later rules anachronistically. I have dealt with this matter by adding the 1st baron's ancestors to the article as predecessors. These predecessors were barons by tenure, since they held Dudley Castle by barony, but they would merely be classed as feudal barons. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:43, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
