2006 - worries about stitching and adhesives[edit]

I have just seen the New Scientist article on the testing of the balute (dated 12 October 2006). http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn10288-inflatable-cushions-to-act-as-spacecraft-heat-shields.html.

This implies that there are worries about stitching and the behaviour of adhesives. I would like to ask if there has been any thought to utilising diffusion bonding, which would get around these problems, and also the use of metal foils as the sheet material. It occurs to me that metals would have a higher working temperature and strength and that a multilayer cellular structure would improve the insulating behaviour and robustness.

Fictional references[edit]

This section is currently short, but I'm worried that it could easily expand to an unwieldy and unencyclopedic list. Carolina wren (talk) 00:04, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

External Links[edit]

The external Link to the ESA-publication has changed to: http://www.esa.int/esapub/bulletin/bullet103/marraffa103.pdf --84.61.120.167 (talk) 15:02, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

References[edit]

Reference number 4 is now 404. I seem to be unable to edit the references though. I just get a self-closing "References" tag. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dolst (talkcontribs) 14:28, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Different configurations[edit]

Text mentions cocoon, [base-]attached, and towed configurations. And isotensoid. More diagrams would be helpful (eg of isotensoid, and the original Goodyear design), and maybe applications could say or show which design is used, and which deployment speeds. - Rod57 (talk) 08:17, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
