BYD's badge[edit]

Do anyone know that BYD's badget actually copies BMW's badge? All the way down to the pattern, font and all —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.156.11.5 (talk) 14:24, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know, but I think the new logo of BYD Auto (not that blue and white oval) isn't copy. -- Love Krittaya (talk) 09:01, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Judging from its historical blue and white oval logo, BYD can be considered as the most successful counterfeit brand in the world (Welsh: byd) ever. In other words, I think this is an absolutely very rare case that a counterfeit brand become a global brand. --Love Krittaya (talk) 16:18, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

F6e not the same as the F6DM?[edit]

I think the F6e is the plug-in, but the F6DM, is a "dual mode" (not "dual model") hybrid, whatever that means. 209.77.205.9 (talk) 13:50, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The terms are apparently synonymous, per the BYD external link I added to F6e. J T Price (talk) 14:34, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The article seems to be strangely inconsistent. The "Models" subsection says" "BYD exhibited the PHEV, ... at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.... The car went on sale on December 15, 2008." But "PHEV" is not one of the models in the list immediately following this sentence. Either (1) this list is out of date, and "PHEV" needs to be added, or (2) the sentence saying that they introduced a model "PHEV" is incorrect, and the actual model name needs to be listed. (from context, probably BYD F3DM, but the article should actually say that, if that's the model that was introduced, instead of making the reader guess. The article on BYD F3DM does not mention the Detroit auto show) Geoffrey.landis (talk) 20:33, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"DM" or "Dual Mode" is a BYD's word/name for PHEV. --Love Krittaya (talk) 05:28, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is F3e the same thing as the F3DM?[edit]

I have no references about F3e and F3DM are same model but BYD Auto renamed F3e to F3DM. -- Love Krittaya (talk) 11:28, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Intellectual property violations[edit]

I was under the impression that there actually had been lawsuits regarding the copycatting. Perhaps it was another company?AniRaptor2001 (talk) 05:25, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If there hasn't been, there is at least enough coverage of the phenomenon in reliable secondary sources to justify its inclusion, even under the heading of "IP theft": Road rage in the West as copycat cars from China start to make their marque overseas, Rolls-Royce considers legal action against £30,000 Chinese copycat Fleetham (talk) 02:11, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Logo content[edit]

Content restored by Fleetham (talk · contribs) has a couple of problems.[1] It asserts that it is "interesting to note" but does not explain why nor does it cite a source that it is interesting. The external link violates our guideline, "Wikipedia articles may include links to web pages outside Wikipedia, but they should not normally be used in the body of an article." (WP:EL) Instead it should be in a footnote. Walter Siegmund (talk) 01:23, 22 January 2010 (UTC

Word Choice in Copycat section[edit]

Why use the word "ape" to mean "ressemble", or "emulate"? Why even, copycat? I say it seems to be a violation of WP:POV. 64.254.236.98 (talk) 15:40, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

response[edit]

I was the one to use the word. I don't see how it's use can be a violation of WP:POV, as all instances of exterior design "reuse" are cited. I am saying, "I didn't think they copied, someone else thought they copied and I am registering it." My small dictionary says the meaning of the word ape is to "imitate the behavior or manner of, especially in an absurd or unthinkable way." In this instance, BYD Auto has imitated the manner of cars belong to other carmakers, and in a way unthinkable by most Japanese, European, American or Korean carmakers.

Other words that could have been used are:

  • copy: "to make something to be similar or identical to another" - this is a more apt term, but for stylistic reasons is not to be overused in the passage, that is "don't use the same word twice".
  • emulate: "match or surpass, typically by imitation" - not applicable
  • imitate: "take or follow as a model/copy or simulate" - not applicable because the cars copy too closely the exterior design of those other cars. This is why the word "resemble" is N/A, too. The cars do not imitate or resemble, they are the exterior designs of other carmakers. They don't take a design cue here and there, they take an entire front fascia.
  • mimic: N/A because it has connotations of "copying in order to annoy that which is being copied"

Fleetham (talk) 22:04, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"BYD Auto has imitated the manner of cars belong to other carmakers, and in a way unthinkable by most Japanese, European, American or Korean carmakers." Well, don't look at the Equinox. Fleetham (talk) 00:47, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

removal of "look-a-like" section[edit]

I don't believe the "look-a-like" content enriches the article or better informs the reader and I have removed the section. Fleetham (talk) 20:11, 25 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replacing[edit]

Someone replaced it, and I don't think it's appropriate because other Chinese car companies do the same, but they don't have a "copying claims" section. I think that maybe it should be removed from all Chinese car-makers, including BYD, or a mention should be made at all the pages that exhibit such external-appearance copying--perhaps in the "History" section, because they've surely stopped such behavior? Fleetham (talk) 15:53, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, these citations are more-current. Putting it in the BYD History section isn't appropriate at this time. Fleetham (talk) 16:06, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll go and make copying claims sections for some other automakers, so BYD isn't the exception. Fleetham (talk) 16:20, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I made copying sections for: Chery Automobile, Geely, and Great Wall Motor. There may be other companies, like the one that copied the Smart for2. Few Government-affiliated automakers copy, but Chery may be an exception. Fleetham (talk) 18:25, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copying section[edit]

Shouldn't the "copying claims" material be in a general "controversies" section? Fleetham (talk) 00:33, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bundling[edit]

I notice a recurring problem with Fleetham's bundling of references. Currently, the Wall Street Journal article titled "Beijing Halts Construction of BYD Auto Plant" is listed no less than FOUR times. This is why bundling can be problematic, better to list it once and have one or two superscripts appear. "Company Profile" is listed three times, and Gunther (perhaps others as well) are listed twice. I would advice using bundling only when the cite is not used elsewhere in the article to avoid these sorts ouf troubles.  ⊂| Mr.choppers |⊃  (talk) 12:58, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

response[edit]

Yeah, I don't like it either. But here's the dichotomy: it's either multiple superscripts or multiple instances of a source in the references. You can either have text with multiple superscripts, some inside sentences, and have each source listed once, or you can have one superscript at the end and multiple instance of a source in the references.

As WP:Citing sources calls citations inside sentences "visual clutter", says multiple superscripts at the end of a sentence are "confusing", and make no mention of the importance of listing each source only once in the references, wikipedia policy is more in support of having multiple instances of a cited source than the obverse of this problem.

Do you have a solution to this problem?

One way that appears to mitigate the problem is to bundle all the sources used only once and have multiple superscripts at the end of the sentence. In practice, many sources used multiple times in the article will appear inside sentences as well as in support for entire sentences.

So the same dichotomy appears here as well. It would be nice to just have one or two superscripts at the end of a sentence, but with the citation tools currently available on wikipedia, this is not always achievable. I do think wikipedia policy is implicitly in support of multiple instances of cited sources in the references section. Fleetham (talk) 15:32, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have never seen the same reference listed twice in any other article and can't imagine that it is the preferred method. The obvious solution is to stop providing references for things that don't need references (such as names of companies or abbreviations). I would say that referencing only those statements which are likely to be challenged (as per Wikipedia guidelines) will minimize these problems. I am starting a conversation on Wikipedia talk:Citing sources and suggest that you await consensus before you continue making these drastic (and in my eyes less than optimal) changes to all the articles you contribute to.  ⊂| Mr.choppers |⊃  (talk) 16:07, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in BYD Auto[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of BYD Auto's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "F3DM":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 01:27, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

BYD Albuquerque buses?[edit]

Would it be worth mentioning in the article that BYD sold buses to the City of Albuquerque, but the two parties disputed over perceived issues in reliability, and the City of Albuquerque recently returned all of the buses to BYD? One such link on the issue would be https://www.koat.com/article/electric-art-buses-split-for-california-one-had-to-stop-early/25337413 . 68.66.89.126 (talk) 19:16, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
