I believe that the azygos vein enters the Inferior Vena Cava and not the Superior Vena Cava. My information comes from Grant's Atlas of Anatomy by Anne Agur and Arthur Dalley and is from the 11th edition.

Thank you.

No, it's the superior vena cava. Check the last sentence on section 1.73. The part that connects with the SVC is called the arch of the azygos vein, and it's fairly substantial. Check section 1.75...you can see it empty into the SVC. Mauvila 05:57, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
yep, that's definitely the case that the azygous branches from the svc, not sure about grant's atlas but this is clearly demonstrated in grant's dissector. --Taoster 17:49, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My copy of the Atlas (5th ed) describes the azygous as "communicating" with the ivc and "ending above" in the svc. Perhaps a little ambiguous but I don't really think so.RayJohnstone (talk) 07:15, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just plain wrong[edit]

This doesn't make a lot of sense owing to the fact that the inferior vena cava and superior vena cava both drain freely into the right atrium of the heart, there is no vena cava insufficieny in normal life. Now if someone had mis-interpreted an article on SVC obstruction then they might be describing an alternative passage for blood back to the heart but that's not what is stated here.Arfgab (talk) 14:27, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cut Text[edit]

Together, they form an anastomosis between the superior vena cava to the inferior vena cava.

"It can be noted that the azygos system of veins exists because the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava are not continuous. While the aorta travels downward (continuously) through the mediastinum, supplying blood to the intercostal spaces, the vena cava does not exist at the level of the heart. Thus, the azygos venous system makes up for this deficiency of the venae cavae."
