Pronunciation of name[edit]

I added the pronunciation, (eye-LEEN TET-sel) based on how Germans say the name in interviews and such, without any correction by Aylin. I read in a German magazine that she once said that her last name, Tezel, was pronounced like Gemetzel. That word would sound to an American like ga-MET-sel. Turks might say the name differently, but Aylin was born in Germany and does not speak Turkish. I have never heard her say her own name herself, but I imagine she would use a pronunciation like eye-LEEN TET-sel. Tupelo the typo fixer (talk) 16:43, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Her father is Turkish, Dr. Necmettin Tezel. Her mother is a German nurse, Ingrid Tezel. When she was asked in an interview on a Tatort set if she spoke German or Turkish at home, she answered that she unfortunately "knew absolutely no Turkish." When asked further about it, she added that "My father is Turkish, my mother German, and both spoke to me in German therefor I never learned the Turkish." She said those things in German, but I am providing the English translation of what she said about it.

I generally call people in my real life according to the pronunciation they themselves use, for example, when I meet an American with a German surname who pronounces it a more American way, I don't "correct" them to the proper German pronunciation. I suspect that you are providing the actual Turkish pronunciation of the name. I have suspected that Turks wouldn't say the name with the TS sound for the Z the way Germans do, I think only Germans do that, but if she uses a German pronunciation then we should too. I appreciate your providing the actual Turkish pronunciation. I mean that, I really have wondered for some time how the name would be said in Turkey. But my interest in that is just curiosity; I don’t think that we should start trying to get Aylin and everyone else to start saying her name differently. I will start to agree with you only when she starts saying her name that way, and starts correcting those who say TET-sel. When and if that happens, I will join you and will start using the name however she wants it to be used. But she seems content to be, in her own words, Tezel wie Gemetzel. You should be too. I am deleting the whole bit about pronunciation, It just causes too much trouble. She is a famous person and I was indicating the pronunciation that she is actually known by, and at her own request. No problem, I’ll pass the word along to her just as soon as she gets home . . . are you kidding? Or do you actually think I actually know her personally? I have never met her, or even anyone who knows her, and probably never will. I have no means of doing any “original research”. Everything I know about her is from sources that are out there, that you can access just as easily as I, if you can read German, and I think you can. I know how her first name is pronounced from having heard her name mentioned in numerous German media. I know how her surname is pronounced by finding a site that quotes her as describing how to say the name, comparing it to the German word Gemetzel. I have already showed you where you can check that for yourself. And by the way, if you are going to insist on labeling her as “German Turkish” then please site your source showing that she has dual citizenship. Good luck, I have yet to find such a source. Or are you doing a little bit of “original research” of your own?

parents' names[edit]

No39 I found out Aylin's mother's name because back when they were filming Dublin Berlin they had a site that made mention of Aylin's mother contributing and it shows her mother’s name as Ingrid Tezel. About her father, I got that name by looking at online stories that state that her father is a Gynecologist in Bielefeld, and other sites that show only one Dr. Tezel in Bielefeld, and he is a gynecologist whose first name is Necmettin.
