It seems that it's accepted convention that "notable residents" can include people who used to live in the town (eg, Jim Carrey is listed as such in Newmarket), but I have not seen any proof that DeVries and Johnson ever lived in Aurora - just that they played for the Tigers. Per Capita income[edit]

Somebody just altered the article so that it says, "The town has the highest Per capita income in the country." Could well be true, but it's uncited. Can anybody confirm one way or the other? PKT 20:30, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There has been an anonymous user that has inserted similar phrases into this article over the last few years. I don't think they're based on any actual data. Calgary makes a similar claim (see this). I found a much better source, but for earnings, nor per capita income. StatCan has highlight tables from the 2001 census for earnings by census subdivision - not only does Aurora not qualify that claim nationally, it isn't even first in York Region! Mayor Morris's site[edit]

Including a link to the Mayor's website is questionable, but I can live with it. However it's not necessary to provide the same link 3 times, next to every mention of her name. PK T(alk) 16:52, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can live with that... the problem was that without a link, her name was automatically linked to a dead Phyllis Morris, who has a Wiki entry. I have added a middle initial to her name. Having reviewed policy, I can find no reason for not allowing the Mayor's name to be linked to an external website. Firstly, I recommend a title change to "Notable residents -- current and former", or drop those who do not live in Aurora anymore. Thoughts? 2009 council controversy[edit]

This section has several POV issues.

First, it does not present the side of the majority of council, specifically that it did not receive the integrity commissioner’s report until after it had voted to dismiss him. It also does not clearly state that he dismissed the original code of conduct complaint because of the way it was filed and not on the merits of the complaint itself. ^[1]

Second, the only reference in the section is a link to a Toronto Star editorial, which is an opinion piece, not a news article.

Third, it seems curious that for a community with more than 150 years of history, the only "council controversy" that would warrant inclusion in the article is one involving a sitting council about to enter an election. I'm sure in the history of the town there have been council "controversies" that have appeared to be just a serious to those who lived through them. Why not included other examples?

Finally, the article needs to be updated. Council voted to hire a new integrity commissioner, former Ontario MPP David Tsubouchi, who, in dealing with two complaints against councillor Buck, found her in breach of the code on one of them. ^[2] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jps2121 (talk • contribs) 16:45, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The undersigned agrees with Jps2121 regarding the POV issues with this section. My vote is to remove the section. Failing that, and as a last resort, demonstrate every council has had controversy by outlining the major issues they dealt with (i.e. phone monitoring, charitable event accounting, land deals, etc.)

Interesting that the reference to Councilor Buck has not been removed, but there is no mention of the lawsuit launched by the former mayer against taxpayers. Seriously, if something is going to be mentioned here as a controversial incident, let's include ALL the controversy --- particularly the more outrageous ones. Roger Clute - notable Auroran?[edit]

The list of notable people from Aurora currently includes "Roger Clute, Justice of the Supreme Court", with a dead link as a reference. Clute is not listed at List of Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada. Perhaps he was a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario, but I can't find a reference to back that up.

However, I'm not sure he lived in Aurora. This reference says he lived in Belleville and Toronto - of course he might have lived in Aurora, but in that era it wasn't a bedroom suburb like it is today.

So - can anybody find something that confirms that Justice Roger Clute lived in Aurora? PK T(alk) 22:07, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Affluence[edit]

The entire York region is affluent, and I'm told by a former resident that Aurora is not an exception. I see no reason this should not stay in the lede, except that it also needs to be in the body somewhere, with a reference there. I have been unable to find a ref that speaks only to per capita income being high in Aurora without rolling it into the entire region. So I am going to re-revert this out of the lede with a note referring to this section and please, someone with the relevant newspapers and/or government sites at their fingertips, find the necessary reference. The town of Aurora is not an independent source for this claim. There was a claim made in the New York Times about this several years ago, but it was clear it had used the Wikipedia article as a source. You're right that York, and hence Aurora, are affluent, but by what measure. Aurora (census subdivision) had the 12th-highest household income at the 2006 census. Is that "one of the most" affluent, given that it's not top 5/10/whatever? Mind matrix 21:52, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Seasonal population[edit]

I just removed the following, "Seasonal residence make up a large portion of the population of Aurora. During the summer months the population of the town nearly doubles. People come from across North America and Europe mainly for hunting, fishing, and other seasonal activities." Another editor had tagged this as needing a citation, but it's a pretty far-fetched notion to me. Aurora is much more a bedroom community than a hunting/fishing centre. Any concerns about this?
