Redlinks in the list of presidents[edit]

There are two types of redlinks in the list. One is that there is indeed no article about a particular president. In this case, we need to create such a article, at least as a stub. The other is that there is in fact already an article about this president, but redirects are required. For example, Stanley J. Tambiah should be redirected to Stanley Jeyaraja Tambiah. Good advice! I weeded out quite a few and even created some redlinks when the earlier link led to the wrong person. Academia was dominated at that point by men with Anglo-Saxon names -- two "Halls" two "Wards," for example. So we also need to check out even the links which are not red. This sometimes means adding a link to a disambiguation page or creating a disambiguation page. Tedious but necessary!ch (talk) 18:24, 27 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

List of AAS Presidents[edit]

Evecurid and I have been discussing here about developing this section. We have talked about splitting the section off into a List Article, but for the time being it seems better to leave it as a section. We hope that the list will encourage editors to create articles about the presidents who are now redlinked. If editors have draft articles in their userspaces or on their computers, it would be a good idea to give notice here so as to avoid duplication.

It's fine to create "start" class article or even a a "stub" -- see stub. The "stub" does have the disadvantage of changing any links from red and perhaps dangerously giving the impression that the work has been done where a red link is a call to action.

Update and question: Evecurid is doing an impressive and welcome job of developing this section, creating a template, and editing the pages of the presidents. Question: is being president of AAS important enough in their careers to mention in the lead paragraph of the scholar's article and sometimes repeat in the page? It strikes me as being out of proportion to do so. Whoever wrote the initial article on the person didn't think so. But I hesitate to reverse these additions without discussion. What do you think? I think it's worth mentioning in the lead paragraph if it is at least one of the most important titles of this scholar. The fact that the scholar had served this post is also an evidence of notability of him/her. In my own experience: if I had mentioned that Evelyn Rawski was once a president of AAS (or that she was a *seminal* figure of the New Qing History) in the lead of that article earlier, then it would probably never have been requested by someone for AfD because of notability issue. --Evecurid (talk) 18:27, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point, though Rawski also holds a named chair, which is enough in itself. Could we make a judgment on a case by case basis? For Barbara Daly Metcalf, for instance, the article is still a stub, so the AAS connection is needed, but in the case of others, such as Barbara Stoler Miller, for instance, adding an honor that lasted only one year and leaving out the list of others looks disproportionate (though maybe we should move the others up into a separate section, which is a common enough move). It's not necessary to be completely consistent, but it's nice to be generally parallel.ch (talk) 05:48, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, a judgement on a case by case basis is fine for me. But I think we need to make the deciding factors for the inclusion more concrete. I cut this from the article because the information duplicated the AAS Presidents template, but moved it here in case it might be useful for some other purpose. It's in reverse chronological order, which might be useful some day.
