Amazingly stupid[edit]

It seems every other page on Wikipedia is protected in some form. Ridiculous. This is a disambiguation page. As it stands, Ass is also the title of an album by Badfinger, and it is currently missing from this page.

What's ridiculous? Protection? This page is one of THE single biggest targets for vandalism on Wikipedia. Every half an hour some shmuck comes along and tries to add "Ass: See also [name of person he doesn't like]". The purpose of a disambiguation page is to enable readers to navigate to the correct article if more than one similarly named does exist. Seeing that Wikipedia does in fact have an entry for the album, then I can see some logic in including it - in spite of my doubts that people will freqently come to Wikipedia and search for Ass intending to look for information specifically about this album. I'll add it, but if another editor disagrees and removes it, I probably won't lose any sleep. - Tenmiles 03:07, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also "ass" is an abbreviation for "associate" (less common than "assoc" but still in use in, for example, academic titles such as "ass. prof."). I wanted to add this. Why isn't there an article about the word?[edit]

The term "arse" is not a colloquialism although it is "not now in polite use" (Concise Oxford Dictionary). Collins dictionary says 'taboo - Old English'. Other terms are used in this context in UK English - fundament, anus, buttocks, rump. The word is also used to mean "bottom" as in arse-end (e.g. of the town). The expression in the article, since it is expressly meant to contrast with the US English usage, is probably best written simply as:

Arse: British English spelling of the word for buttocks (not now in polite use).

Hm, I agree that the current is not good, but I think the "not now in polite use" introduces opinion, and is perhaps unsuitable for a disambig page. Arse says, a British, Irish, and Australian slang term for the buttocks but I'm not too sure about that, either - I mean, good to add that it's common in Ireland and Oz, but there are many other meanings to the word. "I live in the arse-end of nowhere, wish I could get my arse into gear, but I arse around too much and can't be arsed" etc. Perhaps "slang" is appropriate? The quotes I gave "not now in polite use" and "taboo - Old English" are not mine. They are quotes from well renowned printed dictionaries. They are not opinion but are an accurate statement of the fact of current practice. If I had stated "This word isn't used since I think it's obscene slang" that would have been opinion and not admissable. Personally, I think the "not now in polite use" is the best description and is worth recording. It is in reasonably plain English; using the word 'taboo' would have required further explanation (not needed in this context). It may be in a decade or more the usage will have changed, then the article may change to reflect this but should also record the history. The article for 'Gay' seems to do this quite qell!

The issue of correct spellings (and correct meanings of words) is quite complicated and is not captured properly in the Spelling article - but I'll leave that for another time.Scanrod (talk) 09:36, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you search for ass on Google Images, Youtube, twitter .com/search?q=ass , etc., most results are the meaning of buttocks. That says a lot about what people around the world usually mean when they use this word.--Roy17 (talk) 17:07, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good point. Search results are often suggestive of the primary topic for a term. However in this specific case, we have to keep in mind that Wikipedia is written in a formal register, and "ass" in its slang sense is very informal, even vulgar. An editor referring to the body part in an article would certainly not write [[ass]], but would instead use [[buttocks]]. Someone searching for information about the body part might use "ass" as a search term, but I doubt it's the most likely search term. I think readers at least have an intuition about Wikipedia being written in a formal tone, and will adjust their search terms accordingly. Colin M (talk) 16:59, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the proposal to move this to "ASS (disambiguation)"? Given that there are uses of "ASS" (like ASS (car) at least I'm pretty sure "ASS" shouldn't redirect to Buttocks even if "Ass" does per WP:DIFFCAPS if so it should go simply to "ASS" (or possibly to "Ass (disambiguation)" per WP:DABNAME).
