Amazingly stupid[edit]

It seems every other page on Wikipedia is protected in some form. Ridiculous. This is a disambiguation page. As it stands, Ass is also the title of an album by Badfinger, and it is currently missing from this page.

What's ridiculous? Protection? This page is one of THE single biggest targets for vandalism on Wikipedia. Every half an hour some shmuck comes along and tries to add "Ass: See also [name of person he doesn't like]". The purpose of a disambiguation page is to enable readers to navigate to the correct article if more than one similarly named does exist. Seeing that Wikipedia does in fact have an entry for the album, then I can see some logic in including it - in spite of my doubts that people will freqently come to Wikipedia and search for Ass intending to look for information specifically about this album. I'll add it, but if another editor disagrees and removes it, I probably won't lose any sleep. - Tenmiles 03:07, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also "ass" is an abbreviation for "associate" (less common than "assoc" but still in use in, for example, academic titles such as "ass. prof."). I wanted to add this. Can someone in a position to do so, well, do so? Thanking you. ass is also an anus —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.220.179.239 (talk) 14:17, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why isn't there an article about the word?[edit]

See Fuck and Shit, for example. I wanted to look up information on the word Ass being used as a suffix to convert an adjective into a comparative form, as in "That's an ugly-ass hat," indicating the hat is particularly ugly. Dansiman (talk|Contribs) 08:34, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Acid Sulphate Soils[edit]

As there is already a page pertaining to Acid Sulphate (Sulfate- Regional Variation) Soils. I thought perhaps a link would be in order?

Acid Sulphate Soils- A type of soil that when drained produces acid.

Arse in British English[edit]

The phrase «Arse in British English» may not serve as a disambig item. Sesshomaru, please, stop reverting me unless you improved this text. Also, buttocks should be groupped with «Arse». Incnis Mrsi (talk) 15:41, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged this page for cleanup. As I really don't like the current formatting, let's see what others think. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 19:18, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am comfortable with Dcljr's edition. My English is not native (and even not spoken) though, but an explanation definitely become clearer. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 11:01, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request from Scanrod, 21 June 2010[edit]

{{editsemiprotected}} In the "Ass" article page this statement appears: Arse British English spelling of the colloquialism for buttocks.

The term "arse" is not a colloquialism although it is "not now in polite use" (Concise Oxford Dictionary). Collins dictionary says 'taboo - Old English'. Other terms are used in this context in UK English - fundament, anus, buttocks, rump. The word is also used to mean "bottom" as in arse-end (e.g. of the town). The expression in the article, since it is expressly meant to contrast with the US English usage, is probably best written simply as:

Arse: British English spelling of the word for buttocks (not now in polite use).

Scanrod (talk) 17:57, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, I agree that the current is not good, but I think the "not now in polite use" introduces opinion, and is perhaps unsuitable for a disambig page. Arse says, a British, Irish, and Australian slang term for the buttocks but I'm not too sure about that, either - I mean, good to add that it's common in Ireland and Oz, but there are many other meanings to the word. "I live in the arse-end of nowhere, wish I could get my arse into gear, but I arse around too much and can't be arsed" etc. Perhaps "slang" is appropriate? See Slang#Distinction between slang and colloquialisms. Bit more discussion is required here, I think...to come up with some consensus?  Chzz  ►  19:34, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So what should you do if the edit says for example "Ass not what you country can do for you...". Undo the request or change it to "Ask? My76Strat (talk) 19:54, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The following two posts were originally posted on my user talk page  Chzz  ►  04:01, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The quotes I gave "not now in polite use" and "taboo - Old English" are not mine. They are quotes from well renowned printed dictionaries. They are not opinion but are an accurate statement of the fact of current practice. If I had stated "This word isn't used since I think it's obscene slang" that would have been opinion and not admissable. Personally, I think the "not now in polite use" is the best description and is worth recording. It is in reasonably plain English; using the word 'taboo' would have required further explanation (not needed in this context). It may be in a decade or more the usage will have changed, then the article may change to reflect this but should also record the history. The article for 'Gay' seems to do this quite qell!

The issue of correct spellings (and correct meanings of words) is quite complicated and is not captured properly in the Spelling article - but I'll leave that for another time.Scanrod (talk) 09:36, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I realise that - that's fine. I simply was not sure of the best solution for that specific page - so I left the request for others, and to get more ideas and opinions. However.... as you have now made the requisite 10 edits, you should actually be able to edit the semi-protected page yourself, if you wish! Cheers,  Chzz  ►  09:56, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
After some considerable debate, comparison to other articles, etc. the best I can come up with for now is:
*Arse is a British English word for the buttocks, and a vulgarism  Chzz  ►  04:45, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm WP:BOLDly using this, for now. Feel free to revert or improve, of course. WP:BRD Thanks,  Chzz  ►  04:52, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Angle Side Side[edit]

I think the Angle Side Side suggestion is a product of original research and ask if there is a source to substantiate this inference, please include the source. My76Strat (talk) 05:13, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

After discussion in IRC and seeing several published references, I concur that this is taught in mathematics. Everything is in order and it was my error. Thanks.My76Strat (talk) 22:45, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AssASS (disambiguation) – so that ass be redirected to buttocks. Roy17 (talk) 14:50, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - Donkeys exist, and are still commonly known by this name in some areas. It's safest to disambiguate. Paintspot Infez (talk) 15:11, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose If anything is primary, it's the animal. Colin M (talk) 15:58, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you search for ass on Google Images, Youtube, twitter .com/search?q=ass , etc., most results are the meaning of buttocks. That says a lot about what people around the world usually mean when they use this word.--Roy17 (talk) 17:07, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point. Search results are often suggestive of the primary topic for a term. However in this specific case, we have to keep in mind that Wikipedia is written in a formal register, and "ass" in its slang sense is very informal, even vulgar. An editor referring to the body part in an article would certainly not write [[ass]], but would instead use [[buttocks]]. Someone searching for information about the body part might use "ass" as a search term, but I doubt it's the most likely search term. I think readers at least have an intuition about Wikipedia being written in a formal tone, and will adjust their search terms accordingly. Colin M (talk) 16:59, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thx! I'm not a native speaker. Although I know ass is chiefly American colloquial, I wasn't aware of its connotation. I just checked some slang. Maybe ass can have its own entry like cunt, dick (slang) or pussy, or its contents be rearranged as
Ass most often refers to:
Slang for buttocks.
Donkeys...
(other sections follow)
Since these two meanings are the most common.--Roy17 (talk) 17:30, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly, but even if it did, it would have to be at ass (slang). It would not be the primary topic for sure, so it's a moot point in the context of this discussion.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 23:22, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, disambiguation is the best option for an ambiguous term. olderwiser 11:48, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppopse If anything, it's the donkey that has a meaningful claim to being the primary topic. Yes, probably if you search for "ass" on youtube you're going to get results involving buttocks, but I don't think readers would really expect an encyclopedia to offer the same relative topic prominences as youtube. – Uanfala (talk) 11:55, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: no reason to treat US slang term as Primary Topic. PamD 14:47, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose the slang term is unlikely to be the primary topic in an encyclopedia (as opposed to a blog) and as noted the donkey term is also common. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:42, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Per WP:NWFCTM, "buttocks" only applies in North American english, so this would be a US centric redirect.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 04:24, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Per donkey. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:33, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Glad people agree with me! -- donkey (talk) 21:34, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
  • Why is the proposal to move this to "ASS (disambiguation)"? Given that there are uses of "ASS" (like ASS (car) at least I'm pretty sure "ASS" shouldn't redirect to Buttocks even if "Ass" does per WP:DIFFCAPS if so it should go simply to "ASS" (or possibly to "Ass (disambiguation)" per WP:DABNAME). Crouch, Swale (talk) 22:38, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
