"His daughter is referred to in contemporary accounts of the murder simply as Miss Wolfe, which could refer to either Mariana (1777–1814) or her younger sister Elizabeth (1778–1806), but later sources name Elizabeth." The convention in the 18th and early 19th century was that the eldest unmarried daughter was "Miss [Surname]", and other younger daughters would be referred to as "Miss [Firstname Surname]" See discussion here. 012.pdf The implication of this convention is thus that "Miss Wolfe" was Mariana, whatever later references say: contemporary readers would have known that a reference to "Miss Wolfe" could only mean Mariana.
