variants section

I have re-vamped and expande this section. I have also listed variants separately as the multiple letter suffixes did not always mean that the aircraft was a sub-variant.Petebutt (talk) 07:46, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

variants

MMM somebody has split the variants into sub-series, which would be fine if ,for instance, An-12RR was a sub variant of An-12R which it isn't, so sorry, that doesn't work either. How about separating out variants which are not sub-variants , like this

An-12R series

  • An-12R
    • An-12RU (a sub-variant of the An-12R)

miscellaneous suffixes

  • An-12RR (NOT a sub-variant of the An-12R)

There is no hurry so please discuss this, or I might take unilateral action! eventually.Petebutt (talk) 08:54, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Mongolia

A minor edit war seems to have erupted over whether or not Mongolia operates (or has operated) the An-12. For the moment, I've reinstated the entry and tagged it with {{fact}}. The article on the Military of Mongolia does not mention the An-12, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility that the An-12 has served with them. If anyone can reference the fact please do so. The entry may be removed if consensus is reached through discussion here that it should be removed. Any further edit warring over this issue will lead to blocks being handed out. Somali / Somaliland

There is an An-12 standing at Hargeisa Airport in Somaliland (And has been standing since at least 2 month). Now, I don't know whether this is a An-12 operated from here or just a "longterem guest". --196.201.207.191 (talk) 17:24, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Production history wrong

The numbers do not add to the total produced, unless 1973 is excluded and far more were produced in 1973 than in any other year.76.105.131.18 (talk) 00:02, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

Agreed - the source does not seem to be reliable, and does not match the total which can be found in reliable sources. I've removed it.Nigel Ish (talk) 00:26, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

Moving the 'variants' to a new article..

Looking at the article, the variants section is too long. Would anyone object if I move them to a separate article under the title Antonov An-12 variants (just like Mil Mi-24 variants), thus avoiding clutter? Regards—UY Scuti Talk 20:48, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

I would be more inclined to move the accidents and incidents to a separate article first as variants is more important but I dont have a strong objection. MilborneOne (talk) 20:58, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
I agree about the accidents and Incidents section - these have a nasty habit of overwhelming the article. The operators section is another option to be spun out to a separate article - particularly if it is to be referenced properly.Nigel Ish (talk) 21:21, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Alright, moving the accidents and incident to a new article Accidents and incidents involving the An-12 family.. Regards—UY Scuti Talk 05:28, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Done splitting the article (feel free to improve). I've tweaked the layout of the 'operators' section (hope it looks good and avoids the clutter). Now the 'variants' section... We'll let it remain here or move it to a new article? Regards—UY Scuti Talk 18:55, 1 January 2016 (UTC) Ping @MilborneOne and Nigel Ish: —Edited 19:42, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Notable appearances in media

World War Z(film) is the highest grossing zombie film of all time at over $540 million. Many military aircraft enthusiasts noticed the intermittent appearances of the Antonov An-12, alternating with a Lockheed C-130 Hercules when the plot clearly indicates this is just one aircraft. Personally, I was unaware of the An-12 until seeing this movie and quickly discerning that the aircraft in some of the movie scenes was not the C-130 more familiar to citizens in Western military powers. The movie likely was the introduction to the An-12 for many Western military aircraft enthusiasts and the count of visits to this webpage is likely correlated with the significant dates for World War Z(film). Perhaps this could also be correlated with the movie's overseas release dates and versions of this webpage in those nations' languages (e.g. 7 July 2013 in the Netherlands correlated with visits to the Dutch language version of the An-12 webpage.) Given these considerations, it seems appropriate to add World War Z(film) to the Notable appearances in media section. Thank you for your consideration. Not really relevant here if at all but you need to raise it at Aircraft in fiction article talk page which has a section on the An-12. MilborneOne (talk) 00:59, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
