I'll review this article shortly. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 16:50, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hooray! (I guess I'm impatient; sometimes I nearly forgot it was nominated.) — KV5Talk • 22:00, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

After doing a skim read (full one will be tomorrow ideally), I'm concerned that the article might be too stat-intensive. Some are good, but too many will leave non-baseball fans confused. I'll know if it's a problem after reading it, but that definitely caught my eye. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:30, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's not a huge amount in his career to talk about besides his stats. I know it's a long article; would linking statistics more often help (once per section rather than once per article)? — KV5Talk • 10:57, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That probably won't be needed. Basically, if I see anything where there is stat overkill, I'll note it. As for the full review, barring a problem it'll be Monday night (my weekend is shot, else I'd do it sooner) Wizardman Operation Big Bear 03:06, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a couple things to start you off:

  • "However, the Giants, having given Hansen a 2–0 lead in the first inning, scored five runs in the sixth inning against Pirates starter Fritz Ostermueller, so Hansen did not receive a decision;" If the Giants were already ahead, why would adding five runs to the total create a no-decision? The fact that they lost afterwards makes it true, but not the way it's written currently.
    • Dunno where my head was there. A simple trim sufficed, I think. Should be doneKV5Talk • 18:22, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "For the year, Hansen finished with a 3–3 record and a 6.49 ERA in 52 2⁄3 innings pitched; he appeared in 23 games (4 starts) and struck out 15 batters while walking 32, all as a 19-year-old rookie" I would take out the last part and move it to the start, i.e. 'Hansen finished his rookie season with a 3-3 record...while walking 32.'
    • Open to suggestions here, but I didn't really want to remove the age, because it establishes context for the following section wherein he is the Giants' youngest pitcher in 1945. I will try to re-word later and make it less run-on-y. — KV5Talk • 18:22, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
      • The age can be left in, though I still think moving it to the start of the sentence would sound slightly better. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 02:36, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm only through 1944 though so there will definitely be more coming. Now that I'm reading the article more closely though, the stat issues are not as bad as I originally thought, so that should not be an issue. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 18:01, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here are the issues I found throughout the rest of the review:

  • There are fraction symbols available in the markup edit box (⅔ and ⅓), not sure if using those or the template is more ideal MoS-wise, but just tossing it out there since the big fractions through me off originally, though nothing is technically wrong with them.
    • MOS:NUM says "The use of the few Unicode symbols available for fractions (such as ½) is discouraged entirely, for accessibility reasons among others." — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Hansen earned a no-decision in a May 17 start against the Cubs,"
    • I assume this was in reference to the hyphen? If so, I've fixed that; if not, what was the issue? — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "he allowed 4 runs through 1 1⁄3 innings" and "and gave up 3 runs in 1 1⁄3 against": despite the fractions, I believe those numbers still need to be written out.
    • OK. I always struggle with what to do in that case. — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "the Giants lost; 4–0." comma
    • Oy. Done. — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Mel Ott was Hansen's manager in 1948." he was his manager for those first few seasons of his career; right now it just makes it sound like he was one season.
    • OK, fixed. — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "when he pitched 1⁄3 inning" 1/3 of an inning would be consistent with how it is elsewhere.
  • "in 2⁄3 scoreless innings" perhaps just in 2/3 of an inning; since he struck out two scoreless is implied.
    • Not necessarily; the number of batters faced isn't mentioned and he could have struck out two but allowed a home run in between. — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "throwing a perfect 1⁄3 inning" i see this a few times, and I'm not sure if it's worth calling it perfect when he's just facing one batter. I could be wrong though, but it doesn't seem worth it.
    • It seemed better to have some sort of descriptor rather than "pitching 13 inning" over and over again. — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • "and they were described as "recently wedded" when interviewed by author Wes Singletary in 2006" he was recently wedded in 2006 and died in 2002? Sounds a bit off as written, especialy if the two originally dated while he was still active.
    • You're right. The dating and late marriage is actually true, but I didn't realize the disconnect in that Hansen had died four years before Singletary's book was published. — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • My main issue with this article is that it seems to get bogged down in the details. It's not too bad, but I had to push myself to get through it; not sure if noting every single game was the best approach. It's about as good of an article as can be made currently, so I think it's fine for GA, though I wouldn't be able to support an FA.
    • Understood; I don't plan on going for FA anyway, I fear it. — KV5Talk • 12:00, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll put the article on hold and will pass it when the issues are fixed. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:39, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, it will probably be a few days until I can actually sit down long enough to address these, but not too much longer. Thanks. — KV5Talk • 02:00, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's alright, take your time. Gave me time to finish the Killebrew article finally while you wrap this up. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 02:23, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Everything checks out now, so I'll pass the article as a GA. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 14:41, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
