Astronaut?[edit]

Why is he described as an astronaut? Although a candidate as an astronaut, he didnt fly. Neither his X-15 flights or his X-70 flights were high enough to qualify. Viam Ferream (talk) 09:08, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I have a copy of his autobiography (not widely published, I guess). He never flew the X-15 according to his autobiography. His highest recorded flight in the XB-70 is well below the altitude necessary for astronaut wings. Will re-read the book and see if he mentions ever receiving astronaut rating, but I don't remember seeing it. Reid Wightman (talk) 13:52, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I finished re-reading his autobiography. He never mentions receiving astronaut rating, only that he was on the waiting list to fly the X-15 and that many of his friends became astronauts flying that plane. So, I would suggest removing the Astronaut bit. Reid Wightman (talk) 13:52, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
