1941 National Championship[edit]

I have delisted the "national championship" claim from the infobox as Alabama was not selected by the AP poll in 1941 and in fact was selected by only one obscure entity, while Minnesota was a nearly unanimous choice. Hard to claim a legitimate national championship when you finish third in your conference. Vidor (talk) 13:36, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have relisted the championship. As most people are aware the NCAA does not choose an official champion each year. The AP poll was founded in 1936 and the Coaches poll in 1950. They quickly became the consensus way a national champion was recoginzed. However prior to 1936 and in the early days of both of the wire service polls, many other organizations crowed championships (and still do). The schools have alot of discreation as to whether or not to claim these titles (many schools do claim titles by non-major selectors, many schools do not, and many schools claim some but not others). Alabama claims 1941 and the NCAA lists them, along with Texas, as having recieved selections ([1]). Minnnesota was clearly the consensus and lone champion for 1941, but due to the fact Alabama was selected by an organization, the NCAA lists that organization, and the school chooses to claim that year, it should be listed.

The circumstances regarding the '41 claim as well as noting Minnesota was the near unanimous selection should be noted, and IS noted within a paragraph for the 1941 season. 24.126.172.165 (talk) 01:35, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
