Axel Island "the Rock in Bell Sound"?[edit]

I found the description of the events of 1626 rather confusing. The Hull whaling station sounded as if it were just across the Muscovy Company's station at the eastern entrance of Recherchefjorden, but the only places I knew (or thought) they had stations was on "the Rock in Bell Sound" (Conway and others thought this referred to Axel Island) and in a little bay on the north shore of Bell Sound, Van Muyden Haven or Harbor. I just read a paper I had received in the mail (Hacquebord 2003) that stated "the Rock in Bell Sound" referred to Midterhuken, a prominant headland separating the two extensions of Bell Sound. Here there are three stations at the base of a large rock, one of which was a permanent establishment. This latter station was most likely the Hull station referred to in the 1626 account, as Hacquebord stated in the paper. Also, they found no remains of whaling stations on Axel Island.
