Concern about use of "wokism."[edit]

The article currently contains the sentence "James became interested in wokism in high school." 'Wokism' is a political term generally used in a derogatory manner. The policy on "Biographies of Living Persons" reads:

BLPs should be written responsibly, cautiously, and in a dispassionate tone, avoiding both understatement and overstatement. Articles should document in a non-partisan manner what reliable secondary sources have published about the subjects, and in some circumstances what the subjects have published about themselves. Summarize how actions and achievements are characterized by reliable sources without giving undue weight to recent events. Do not label people with contentious labels, loaded language, or terms that lack precision, unless a person is commonly described that way in reliable sources. Instead use clear, direct language and let facts alone do the talking.

The word 'wokism' is not particularly clear or direct language, as it lacks a broadly accepted and rigorous consensus definition.

I then checked the linked article. The source for using 'wokism' seems to be a conflation of two passages from the Greek City Times that read:

"Adele James first discovered her passion for acting in high school, where she played the stand-in for Mrs. Casper in an all-female production of 'Kes', after which her mother declared she had 'found her calling'."

"Commentators accuse Netflix of distorting history, with many noting that these choices make no sense, but are made purely for commercial reasons to exploit the momentum of the woke movement."

Saying "[Ms.] James became interested in wokism in high school" is not an accurate summary of these two passages from the article. Stipulating that 'wokism' is a universally understood name for a real ideology, there is no evidence from the linked article that James personally has any interest in it. Nor is there evidence that this interest, should it exist, comes from her high school years and not earlier or later. Whereas there is support in the text for her becoming interested in acting.

I think it would be a more accurate representation to say "became interested in acting" than "became interested in wokism."

Yeah, it was vandalism that existed for a few hours before you fixed it (see [1] - it has said "acting" since the page was created. Tobus (talk) 02:47, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
