Better photo

  • Hey, this is Adam himself. I was alerted about this on Twitter. I'd like to supply a better photograph that I can donate the rights to. Can an experienced Wikipedia help facilitate that? It has been years since I've edited WP so I don't know the processes anymore. If you are the copyright holder of the photo you wish to use, then please take a look at WP:DONATEIMAGE. The easiest thing for you to do would be you to upload the file directly to Wikimedia Commons as explained in c:Commons:Upload. You will, however, need to register for an account if you do not already have one (see c:Commoms:Commons:First steps/Account). You're welcome Adam Conover. I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide for reference. COI editing is not expressly prohibited by Wikipedia, but it is something which is highly discouraged because it can quickly lead to more serious problems. I also recommend taking a look at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, in particular the "Dealing with articles about yourself" section. Finally, your choice of username is allowed per Wikipedia:REALNAME, but you might want to consider contacting OTRS to verify your identity to avoid any misunderstandings with other editors. Hi again Adam Conover. I looked at File:Adam Conover photograph.jpg your image, and unfortunately I think you should read c:COM:OTRS#If you are NOT the copyright holder. Since you are the uploader, the person depicted in the photo, and also listed as the author ( "Big Breakfast" is you right?), then it seems kind of hard for you to have actually taken this particular photo. Typically the copyright is held by the photographer who takes the photo. Perhaps this was a work for hire and there was an official copyright transfer agreement made? Perhaps you did take the photo yourself using a timer of some kind? The photo can be seen being used online here in a New York Times article prior to its being uploaded to Commons which means you are going to have to send a permissions email to OTRS explicitly stating that you are the copyright holder or that the copyright holder has explicitly agreed to freely license the photo. Your last guess is correct. The rights to the photograph were bought by the production company Big Breakfast, of which I am a representative (being an Executive Producer on the show.) I wll send the email as requested. @Adam Conover: As long as you are able to provide proof that you are the copyright holder of the image, everything should be sorted out. What you need to do is follow the instructions at c:COM:OTRS#Declaration of consent for all enquiries. I think you might be able to do everything online now using the "Interactive Release Generator", but feel free to ask for assistance at c:Commons:Help desk if you get stuck. Once you have filed/sent a declaration of consent, you can replace the template I added to the file's page with c:Template:OTRS pending. Just login to Commons, go to the file's page, click on "Edit", remove the "No permission since" template at the top of the page, and then add {{subst:OP}}. Click on the "Show preview" button and if everything looks OK, click on "Save changes". The "OTRS pending" gives 30 days for the file's licensing to be verified. If it's not verified by then, the template will automatically revert back to c:Template:No permission since. There tends to be a bit of a backlog, so OTRS verification might not happen right away. You should receive an OTRS ticket number when you send in your email or create the release. Keep this on file somewhere because you can use it as a reference number to ask questions about the files status at c:Commons:OTRS/noticeboard. If by chance the file should be deleted before the license has been verified, do not re-upload it. Files are not really deleted; they are only hidden from public view. Yes, I can prove that Big Breakfast is the copyright holder and that I represent them; will I be required to present that proof, or was the email I sent proof enough? The email you sent in to OTRS should contain enough information to allow an OTRS volunteer to verify any claims you've made. OTRS volunteers have been specially selected/vetted and tasked by the Wikipedia community to deal with private and proprietary information, etc. I am not a OTRS volunteer myself so I am not privy to exactly what things they are looking for, but I'm sure one will contact you if the information you sent in is lacking in any way. As I posted above, you can always ask any questions at c:COM:OTRSN. AS for adding the file back to the article, maybe just wait until the licensing issue is sorted. Once your email has been received and OTRS volunteer will replace the "OTRS pending" template with c:Template:OTRS received and once the licensing has been verified that "OTRS recieved" template will be replaced with c:Template:PermissionOTRS. After the licensing has been sorted out one way or another, then someone (even you) can probably re-add the file to the article without any problem. If someone object and removes it again, then things will be hashed out on this talk page per WP:BRD. Finally, one last thing, try to think of the article as an "article written about you" and not "your article". Birthday redux

@MellowOffspring: Responding to this revert. His birthday comes from what seems to be a reliable self-published source, and calculating a person's year of birth is a routine calculation (there's even a template for it), not OR. Combining data points like this ought to be an acceptable calculation; WP:DOB's "no original research" provision is based on an exceptional case that involved guesswork and conflicting results. All that said, I see now that the subject doesn't really want his date of birth on Wikipedia; suggest instead adding 1982 or 1983 (age 40–41), citing the Spokesman-Review. Yes, the subject has said in a few outlets that he does not want his birthdate on Wikipedia. And personally, I don't think a single number in a puff piece in a small paper is a particularly reliable source (according to WP:RS, "Human interest reporting is generally not as reliable as news reporting, and may not be subject to the same rigorous standards of fact-checking and accuracy".) However, given that this is an area of constant dispute on this page, having SOME number there might prevent constant reverts, so I won't object. This approach is blessed by WP:DOB, which says "If a subject complains about our inclusion of their date of birth, or the person is borderline notable, err on the side of caution and simply list the year, provided that there is a reliable source for it."
