So, technically almost any compilation of music that is not distributed through major retail music channels are considered to be a mixtape (even though at times mixtapes are also being sold through major retail stores such as Best Buy, iTunes or FYE). So, your next question should be: What is a mixtape again? At this point, I'm also confused about the definition. The uses of “mixtapes” and their distribution change depending on the purpose of the mixtape and who creates and/or distributes them." ... and that's an expert writing a book who is confused, what hope for our readers? It seems that the term (mixtape) is not a helpful or consistent one and that many of our (mixtape) articles are in fact not real mixtapes at all, just hip-hop (album) articles.
