Started life as the 20th Cavalry Brigade[edit]

The May and August 1939 Army List security edition has a 20th Cavalry Brigade, commanded by E.D. Fanshawe. It is worded in such a way that implies formation on 2/1/1939 although this I don't believe I saw it in the 1939 lists until at least the May security edition [1]. The London Gazette does specify that he took command on that date. Per Joslen, Fanshawe was the first commander of the 20th Light Armoured Brigade and he notes that the 20th Light Arm Bde was formed on 9/3 (Joslen, p. 166). The 1st Light and 2nd Light Armoured Brigades were both formed when the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Brigades were formed, so it appears that this brigade started forming early 1939 and was renamed as an armoured formation on the outbreak of the war.
