Republican Candidate Forums[edit]

Can we just go ahead and change all of the Ns to As? I reckon that they're inviting all of the candidates to most of these things even if they're not serious or just running as a joke.

I'd agree. We don't have reliable sources for the lists of invitees, so a simple "absent" is more open-ended than "not invited", which is more specific. Kafoxe (talk) 19:53, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gov. Ivey's Eligibility to Run for Re-Election in 2022[edit]

The article as written currently (2021-Apr-5, 10:36 AM) states:

She is eligible to run for re-election for a second full term, but has not yet stated whether she will do so.

Is it true that Ivey is eligible to run for re-election for a second full term? If so, what's the source for this fact?

The relevant passage of the Alabama State Constitution is Amendment 282, which was ratified in 1968. (It is an amendment to Section 116 of the Constitution of 1901, on terms of office and eligibility for re-election.) The text of the Amendment reads (boldface added):

The governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, state auditor, secretary of state, state treasurer, superintendent of education, and commissioner of agriculture and industries, shall hold their respective offices for the term of four years from the first Monday after the second Tuesday in January next succeeding their election and until their successors shall be elected and qualified. Each of said officers shall be eligible to succeed himself in office, but no person shall be eligible to succeed himself for more than one additional term.

Ivey became Governor in April 2017 when her predecessor, Robert Bentley, resigned from office. She succeeded herself as Governor when she was elected Governor in the General Election in November 2018. Thus, it seems that she has already succeeded herself for one additional term, and might not be eligible to succeed herself for a second additional term in 2022. It's possible that this is wrong, or missing something, and that she is in fact eligible despite already having succeeded herself once. But if so, then what is the source for that fact?

Most lopsided election in alabama since 78![edit]
