Flagicons[edit]

I have changed the Eire flag used for Eugene Laverty to the Union flag as deemed correct for Northern Ireland in the Wiki article. The same Union flag is shown for Jonathan Rea. The same 'error'(?) appears in 2018 article, others unchecked. Any reason for this/comments Gpmat and Cs-wolves (as adders of the tables)?--86.29.222.228 (talk) 22:48, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@86.29.222.228: It's not an error; although born in Toomebridge, Laverty holds an Irish racing licence. This is denoted on both his rider profile page from the WorldSBK website and also the official documentation from the series. To signify that he has a British licence would be WP:OR. Thank you - neither of the two links even mentions that he holds an Irish racing licence as you have stated, or why/when, merely the flag in one and 'IRL' in the other. I anticipated somesuch but could not surmise the reason - still cannot without further enquiries. A quick Google shows only unreliable blog gossip/speculation that he holds a different licence, dual/elective nationality, availability of elective licence preference - nothing citable, which is presumably why there's nothing in his Wiki article. Supposition, then, would also seem to be OR. I knew of national-emphasis sports people changing allegiance for inclusion into teams - such as Yaroslava Shvedova (Athletes Switching Nationalities In Spotlight At London Olympics), which is annotated and, of course, is entirely different.--86.29.222.228 (talk) 23:02, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@86.29.222.228: Laverty did once compete as a British rider at Grand Prix level, as a wildcard in the 2004 British Grand Prix. The Irish/Northern Irish element in the infobox has been cyclical even as far back as 2008. However, I do know from the Motorsport and Formula One WikiProjects, the racing licence preference is utilised even if a driver is not born in the country, and that is in line with entry list publications. More discussions than summer days in a good summer... Irish/Northern Irish displaying is always open to interpretation, I must admit. Craig(talk) 23:26, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
