Pay-to-Play?[edit]

Most teams from the "high-major" conferences do not participate in this tournament, even if invited to do so. I have heard that this is because it costs them so much. Does this mean that the participating teams are charged a high entry fee, or that the tournament generates so little money that the teams lose money on the costs to participate, particularly (one would assume) the travel costs?
