Salzburg selected by the Austrian Olympic Committee as their candidate on January 24th, 2005.

Southern Hemisphere

Are nations in the Southern Hemisphere even allowed to bid for the Winter Games? I know the timing would have to be changed, but if Summer Games can be held in Australia, why not Winter Games in, say, Argentina? Funnyhat 22:44, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

In fact, any nation (including East Timor, Bahamas or Monaco) are invited to bid for any Olympic Games. The possibilities for a Winter Olympic Games in the Southern Hemisphere are reals. I know Christchurch, New Zealand put a bid years before and possible they will put a bid for 2014 or 2018. Other possibilities are Santiago, Chillán or Villarrica in Chile or Bariloche in Argentina, but I think only Christchurch and Santiago are real possibilities for the Games, because now they are searching big host cities (Nagano, Salt Lake City, Torino, Vancouver) and maybe they won't select a small city as Bariloche. --KRATK 20:16, 20 July 2005 (UTC). But there are a possibility to do a Winter Olympic Game in Neuquén or Mendoza, in Argentina.

Forget about hosting it in Australia except maybe falls creek, but i wouldn't be suprised to see it hosted in Queenstown in New Zealand, or i would say somewhere like Cuzco, but since Peru has never entered the WInter Olympics, neither does it have any Ski Resorts (I don't think...).144.133.83.58 06:15, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Do we really need the logo of the Austrian Committee ? Shouldn't it be better to wait for the Salzburg 2014 logo ?Hektor 02:47, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

Bid comparison

The bid comparison is not from me. It has been prepared by ghost1 from the GamesBids forum. I just copied it from there. Hektor 16:53, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Divided Korea

Isn't Ireland divided as well, making Korea not "the world's only divided country"? What about China and India?Bayberrylane 20:41, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it does sound odd - I've taken out the words "world's only". — sjorford (talk) 12:14, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

New Sports

There. Someone requested references on the potential new sports. So there you go. I could not find any definitive information on the inclusion of Bandy, but I did find that the International Bandy Federation does have an IOC task force [1].

  • Since these sports will not be included after all, is it worthwhile to keep this section, about something which will not happen ? Hektor 19:49, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
hmm, you have a point there. I realize that this page is devoted to a sporting event that will happen in the future and this section deals with sports that will not take place there. I still think that it is worthwhile because 1. the rejection of these sports happened today (Nov. 28) and 2. the reader might find it useful to know what has been included/rejected and just to be kept up-to-date on the current status of the olympic programme. If anything, the vast majority of this page will be relegated to a new "bidding" page for 2014 and this bit of info will probably follow it. Perakhantu 19:59, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

I believe this page should be merged with 2014 Winter Olympics bids as they both cover the same informations. Rehnn83 13:25, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Keep separate Yes, currently, there is quite a bit of overlap between the two articles. But take a look at 2006 Winter Olympics and 2006 Winter Olympics bids. That's where things are heading. And my guess is if it does get merged, down the road, someone will say 2014 Winter Olympics is too long, break it apart. And, 2010 Winter Olympics has gotten shorter as time has gone on. -- MrDolomite | Talk 03:18, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Keep separate per MrDolomite. Elk Salmon 07:46, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Keep seperate The IOC will be formerly picking the host of the 2014 games in about a year, and as more information gets added, the info about the bids will get shuffled to it's own page. I guess MrDolomite said it best. Perakhantu 08:17, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

I've removed my suggestion of a merger as I make the count 3-1 against. --Rehnn83 15:59, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Infobox

Should there be an infobox ? Personnally I think that there should be one, like all Olympics. Hektor 06:31, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

There is no compelling reason to have it for future Games that have not been announced. Let's look at all the elements of the infobox:
  • Logo image: since none is available, the Olympic rings image is being used. This is a possible violation of the fair-use policy, as per discussion on that image page.
  • Host city: empty
  • Nations participating: empty until 2014!
  • Athletes participating: empty until 2014!
  • Events: empty until program is finalized, likely in 2012 (five years from now!)
correction: program should be finalized until 2011, as the Olympic procedure is to do that 3 years ahead of the Games.--Nitsansh 21:11, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Opening ceremony: can be used now
  • Closing ceremony: can be filled now
  • Officially opened by: empty until 2014!
  • Athlete's Oath: empty until 2014!
  • Judge's Oath: empty until 2014!
  • Olympic Torch: empty until 2014!
  • Stadium: empty for now
As you can see, there is very little that can be filled in at this time. I think the use of the infobox is useless on future Games pages at least until the host city is announced. At least at that time a handful of fields can be added, and a logicial logo image can be used. Until then, it has absolutely purpose in improving the article, and to my eyes, detracts from the quality of the article, reinforcing the future uncertainty of the event. That means we should re-insert this infobox on this page later this year, but not on the 2016 page until 2009, etc. Andrwsc 16:15, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Fine, but it comes back on like every other game on the day the city is announced. ~~ —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Reywas92 (talkcontribs) 20:23, 25 January 2007 (UTC).
The infobox should not be removed. Flibirigit 23:14, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Per Andrwsc's edit summary, I am actually for keeping the infobox. You just made quite an arguement against it that I had to side with you somewhat. Reywas92TalkSigs 18:26, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
That's not how I interpreted your comment. I fully agree with what you said earlier: "it comes back ... on the day the city is announced." Until then, it has no purpose. An infobox is intended to convey summary information, is it not? What information is available until that date? Next to nothing. Let's wait until July 1 when we actually have some information to present in that box. Andrwsc 17:44, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

Dates

Are the dates really fixed? they should be included in the candidature files which each city submits. Did all 3 candidate choose the same dates?--Nitsansh 21:14, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes Hektor 06:16, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Merge proposal

I'd like to propose merging 2014 Winter Olympics bids into this page. Having seperate pages for it causes forking of content, and as we already have a section here for the candidate cities, it would be better to include everything on this page itself. It would put all relevant material in one place. I'd appreciate all editors' ideas about this. Thanks xC | 11:51, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Oppose - already proposed last year, already rejected. There are two such articles for the previous Olympics. When the city is selected the Olympics article will focus on the preparation of the Olympics and the facilities, while the 'bids' article will keep an archive of the failed bids. Hektor 11:53, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
My mistake, was clearing out the backlog on Wikipedia:Proposed mergers. I'd still support a merge, but as consensus decided otherwise, I'm removing the tags. Thanks for the quick response, cheers! xC | 11:55, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

I oppose too, but over time a link to the other bid page should be included.208.107.168.154 18:56, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Almaty2014.jpg

Image:Almaty2014.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Sochi wins the games

the bbc is reporting on [1] that Sochi will host the olympics in 2014 heresthecasey | talk 23:32, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Now that this is all over, I suggest that the vast majority of this page be moved to 2014 Winter Olympics bids. Maybe we can work to make that article featured, much as 2012 Summer Olympics bids is. We have the content, and this page looks great, it's just that now, this page needs to focus less on the bid and the process of the bid, and more on Sochi's preparations.
And on a different note, is the city pronounced "Sah-shee", "Sah-chee", or is the first syllable "Soh"? I have no clue. Jaredt  23:59, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
I agree with the move... but now? Is there enough information to leave on this article? I mean, the 7-year waiting period has just started. But if you find it enough, go ahead. And it's pronounced "Saw-tchee". Parutakupiu talk || contribs 00:11, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
No, don't do it now. We have 7 years, like you said! Haha. But keep it in the back of your minds that this page if not about the bid process, but about the games as a whole (which includes some mention of that process). So sometime between now and February 7, 2014, I suggest that this move be done. Also, if you see the WP:OLYMPICS homepage (?), you'll see I updated the countdown. Only 2300-some-odd days left to Sochi 2014! Jaredt  00:25, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, you did well, I didn't even remember the countdown bar *blush* Parutakupiu talk || contribs 00:44, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Officially opened by ...

It's pretty crystal ballish to say the games were officially opened by anyone considering the games won't happen for another 7 years. It's the same as saying the 2012 London Games will be opened by the Queen. They may very well be opened by the Queen ... or they may be opened by the King by that point in time. 68.146.8.46 01:49, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Well we can still assume that Russia will still have a president in seven years. I am not considering that saying that is crystal balling. Hektor 12:45, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

No doubt we don't have the Official 2014 Winter Olympics logo yet. And I don't think we should use one of Sochi bid (with "candidate city" words) for that purpose. This misleads. (See, for instance, logo for Vancouver 2010 bid and the Official 2010 Winter Olympics logo. They are not even similar.)

  • That's your opinion. So far we have used the winning bid logo till the official Games logo is unveiled for all previous Games (Vancouver, London, etc.). And I think this is perfectly fine that way. Hektor 19:01, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Hektor, thank your for your reply on the topic. I agree we should have the winner's bid logo displayed here until the official Games logo is unveiled. But let's make it clear and don't give Sochi 2014 bid logo another (inappropriate and misleading) "Official 2014 Winter Olympics logo" name. This will make any reader understand what the logo exactly is, to avoid confusion regarding Sochi 2014 bid logo and yet to be unveiled Official 2014 Winter Olympics logo. Any comments are welcome!

Russia and Soviet Union

I disagree with the sentence "This will be Russia's first time hosting the Olympics. ".

  • First, from a purely legalistic, Olympic Charter, standpoint, the Olympic Games are hosted by a city and not by a country.
  • Second, at the time of the Soviet Union, Russia was not a non-existing entity, it was one of the Republics of the USSR. Hektor 05:28, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Proximity to international border

Is it relevant to mention the extreme proximity of the coastal cluster to the border with Georgia/Abkhazia? (On an original research note, this appears to be the closest an Olympic stadium has ever been to an international frontier, less than 5 km.) --Cam 05:24, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

If you can find sources to back up your statements, go ahead. Now, I doubt that any news agency would be commenting about how security may pose an issue due to the proximity to other nations, so I'm sure that with time sources may arise. If you believe it is important enough an issue to include, then maybe just suggest with a source that there has been conflict (major or minor) at that border; if there is actually no problems on the border, then just forget it, at least until an Olympic-context source comes available. Jaredt  20:42, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
There is, indeed, a problem in Abkhazia. The short version is that the region broke away from Georgia in a civil war in the 90s, hosts troops that are nominally CIS peacekeepers but allegedly really just Russian army forces, and is still in a tense standoff with the Georgian government. Fighting could yet resume, potentially during the Olympics. So, yes, it would be appropriate to say something about Sochi's proximity to Abkhazia, but only if we can find a good source for it (a regional expert's quote or something). Fasrad 10:30, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for the insight. Now that I understand, I would agree that it's a good thing to put up on the page, as long as, yes, there is a good source. Jaredt  15:38, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

No advertisement please

I am sure many of us appreciate efforts of any companies busy designing and constructing for the Olympics, but this article is not a place for advertisement of any kind. Please avoid placing such information in the article. Svmich 09:21, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Subtropics issue

Let's make it clear: Torino (Turin) can't be considered a subtropical city (see Torino Climate). Sochi is the first city in subtropics to host Winter Olympics. Svmich (talk) 19:00, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure, if you look at the page on subtropical climate, Torino is definitely in the shaded region, as are the Japanese Olympic Locations. TJ 24 01 08
You are wrong, Torino is a Cfa climate just like the rest of the Po Valley, and Sochi, see Köppen_climate_classification. You can verify this either here:

Subtropical means BOTH the coldest month >0C average and the warmest month >22C average, with significant warm season precipitation. Torino is (barely) humid subtropical as the July average there is 22C and there is sufficient year round precipitation. Climates of other Winter Olympic cities:

  • 2010 Vancouver - Cfb (mid-latitude oceanic)
  • 2006 Torino - Cfa (humid subtropical)
  • 2002 Salt Lake City - BSk (semi-arid steppe)
  • 1998 Nagano - Dfa (humid continental, hot summers)
  • 1994 Lillehammer - Dfb (humid continental, warm summers)
  • 1992 Albertville - Dfb
  • 1988 Calgary - BSk
  • 1984 Sarajevo - Cfb
  • 1980 Lake Placid - Dfb
  • 1976 Innsbruck - Dfb
  • 1972 Sapporo - Dfa
  • 1968 Grenoble - Cfb
  • 1964 Innsbruck - Dfb
  • 1960 Squaw Valley - Dsb (high-altitude Mediterranean)
  • 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo - Dsa (mid-altitude Mediterranean)
  • 1952 Oslo - Dfb
  • 1948 St. Moritz - Dsb

Removal of Turkish Propaganda

Material originating in countries that deny their own extermination of minorities does not belong here. Furthermore, to be perfectly frank, there are still North Caucasus natives living in Russia, but you will not find a single Armenian in Western Armenia. North Caucasus natives also enjoy autonomy and have internal Russian republics to preserve their traditions -- a far cry from the treatment that the Turks doled out to the Armenians. I would be happy to get into an edit war over this --Jackkalpakian (talk) 16:50, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

However, material that is sourced from a third party does belong here. You are promoting a point of view, which is not allowed in articles. Further, saying that you "would be happy to get into an edit war" is really against all sorts of WP guidelines. If you don't like what the article says, then by all means find credible sources to support the inclusion of other facts. Prince of Canada t | c 17:28, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

OK, you asked for it. I think you will not like the latest version. If you want to talk about the Circassians, let us talk about ALL of the Circassians' history, and not the pap that originates in Turkey.--Jackkalpakian (talk) 14:10, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

You're still pushing a point of view. The article you cited shows no relationship with the Olympics, nor indeed can we use another wiki as a source, as Wikipedia itself cannot be used as a source. Nor have you sourced any of your other statements. Please read WP:NPOV, WP:Cite, and WP:V before making further edits on this subject. Prince of Canada t | c 14:34, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

So are you -- you are simply upholding a Turanian POV. With some time passing, I have decided that this is a matter best left to Russian users and editors of the Wiki. That the Cherkess are based in Turkey says a lot about who is promoting this attack on Sochi. Finally, and more importantly -- where are the links in the article to the governments of Karachai-Cherkessia, Karabindo Balkaria and the other autonomies of the North Caucasus? To sustain the argument that somehow there was a genocide, then these entities would not exist, would they? But then again, to ask Prince here for logic is a bit too much.--Jackkalpakian (talk) 22:00, 22 September 2008 (UTC) Circassian organization (mostly outside Turkey) have went to EU for recognition of the Circassian genocide (they first appealed to Russian authorities without a proper response). Today there is a state of Israel so Jewish Genocide never happened right? What an amazing logic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nesij (talkcontribs) 01:38, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Lol, whether they are from or not from Turkey shouldn't matter. You can't just delete sourced material and call it propaganda. We all know pretty well that Russia would love to cover up this particular information, so you8'll find any excuse to get rid of it. But the fact is that it's going to stay, because it is factual, sourced, and relevant. --Yalens (talk) 14:58, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

I have deleted the nebulosis and cretenisms produced by people, who are spreading the myths about circassian-georgian mythology. This propaganda is not suitable for SOCHI-2014 Winter Olympics theme, and is completely irrelevant. Sochi is Russian city, with majority of Russian population. So it cannot be a part of Circassian or Georgian teritorial fantasies and apetites. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.157.199.235 (talk) 22:35, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

First of all, your spelling is atrocious. Second of all, whatever you think of the controversy doesn't change the fact that it is relevant, well-sourced, and factual. You will continue to be reverted if you continue your vandalistic activities.--Yalens (talk) 21:31, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Shouldn't there be six medal events in Freestyle Skiing?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't there be six medal events in freestyle skiing? The calendar section only lists 4. Is it that SkiiCross hasn't been approved for 2014 yet?

The calendar section is based off the Sochi bid calendar, which omits skicross. I'll add a note indicating that to the article. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 06:33, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Nativity of Circassic peoples

I understand that until recently the History of Sochi (written as an ancillary page starting last October) claims that Greeks preceded the Circassic presense in Sochi- however it is incorrect. The Aehi, as well as the Maeotae, the Sindi and so on... are among the ancestors of Circassians. Furthermore, there were Zygii in the area, but only briefly, the real land of hte Zygii lay further east. The author is probably confusing them with the Roman Zychoi, whom the Romans asserted were the same people as the Zygii but in fact weren't (such things are not uncommon, for Mediterranean peoples to confuse obscure-to-them peoples of the Caucasus). --Yalens (talk) 16:01, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

I am sorry but this is not accurate and any person with a background in History, Anthropology or Geography in this area can refute that. Aehi, Zygii and other local tribes are not connected to the Circassic or apart of the same language family. They Circassic are more new comers from the 14 century. Ancient Greeks also came to this region via the Black Sea in the 5th–6th centuries BC. Then the Byzantine Empire and later the Republic of Genoa. Also Circassic were never a unified people nor shared common language or culture which is hinted at. If you can provide informations, please do. This section seems very unrelated and unimportant to 2014 Olympics. It one thing to put protest information and mention that but another to downright put biased and misleading information. Information to look into. http://books.google.com/books?id=0OVRAW0k0UUC&pg=PA64-IA1#v=onepage&q&f=false Glanville Price (1998), Encyclopedia of the Languages of Europe, p. 60. Okay, first, you should indent replies with a colon. Okay, for your info... Zygii have disputed ethnicity, some say they were Nakh, others say they were Circassians, and still others say they were both (they were, after all, a confederation). The Romans however, used the name Zichoi/Zichi (derived from the Greek) to refer to a tribe that was definitely Circassian. The name Zikia was even used as an equivalent for Circassia and/or specifically Ubykhia during the Renaissance period. Strabo apparently also once referred to the "Zygi" as such: "the Heniochi are the Abkazeti. Achtæans, Zygi, and Heniochi" ([[2]]- a translation from Greek available online). It doesn't take much guessing to figure out what people the the Abkazeti are nowadays! And Heniochi, too, is used to be synonomous with Adyge-Abkhaz peoples.
As for some good sources for the long Circassian history, going back to the Maeotae and the Sindi, there is plenty right here on Wiki, but if you want links, here are a couple.
  • [[3]]- This pdf is available free at the Caucasus scholar Amjad Jaimoukha's site. It is about the ancient predecessors of the Circassians. He also has a handful of books about Circassian history, notable Circassians: A Handbook (that's another), which also gives good linguistic info. I don't have it on hand right now, though one can order it if wanted at Jaimoukha's site, here [[4]]. Amjad Jaimoukha is in general well sourced, with historical, archaeological and linguistic info, and is regarded as a primary source for these sorts of topics.
  • As I noted earlier, Strabo's translations. Of course, I would not consider Mediterranean scholars who know little about the region a primary source, but there you have it.
I could go on getting more sources, but really, I hope you get the idea, and you can look through wiki. Lastly though, I am changing 3000 BCE because honestly I didn't put that and I don't believe you can quantify it. We do know, though, that Circassians' ancestors have inhabited Circassia since the onset of recorded history...--Yalens (talk) 01:08, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

There is a good thing to know who Circassians were. To know where they were living in the past and what culuture and religion they were. Their history must be learned in modern day schools, historical institutions and national musseums. But now we live in modern world. In Krasnodar teritory where mayority of population is Russian. And christianity is predominant religion there.

For example an ancient Greeks, Romans, Gauls, Vlachs, Celts, Iliric people...were once landlords and inhabitants of Europe. Later new tribes and people came and settled on their territories mainly by force. So now there would be complete nonsense and idiocy, if some obscure groups of romantic utopists would claim back their ancient land and pagan religion back, from european countries of today. Or for example if modern Turkey would claim back Ottoman Empire conquered terittories from Europe, Russia, Arabs...etc. Or defeated Germany would claim back territories from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, France, Kaliningrad, Baltic... where they were expeld and forced out after the WW2 ended.

This is a complete nonsense and romantic utopism.

This is the part of history.

One fact is clear. Today Sochi and Krasnodar teritory is Russian property. We Russians have the mayority population there, and we won`t allow that some criminal marginal groups in Turkey or somwhere else, threatens our population safety or our winter Olympic games plans in 2014. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.157.199.147 (talk) 11:47, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

This post seems more like a Russian nationalist rant than a useful comment, however I will extract the part that implies that you acknowledge that Circassians are native to Circassia (

But next time please try to be on topic with the topic at hand here... the topic is whether Circassians are native and descended from the ancient peoples of the region (which they are), not Russian fears of Circassians forming a separate state (which probably won't happen anyways, the way it looks right now)...--Yalens (talk) 18:51, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Caucassian black monkeys have allways cried and protest about russian nationalism. Becouse Russian nationalism today is the most healthy and natural form of russian national self-indentification. Becouse after 90 years of marxist-leninist utopism and communist dictatorship, Russian nation has finnaly got their rights back to rise back from asshes and get their national indentity back.

Allot of new black monkey bosses from caucassus (and abroad) with long afro haircuts and greasy beards thought, that after USSR colapsed they would easily proclaim their new mohamedian banana republics on caucassus and expelled all ethinc Russians out of caucassian republics.

Becouse of this attrocities, it is only natural that ethinc Russians formed their own self protection mechanisms (nationalism) against this disseses that invaded Russia in 90`s.

Russians do not have any fears of Cirassian formation of new separate state, becouse the formation of Circassian state on Krasnodar territoriy sounds like classical Monty Phyton commedy scketch about Mr. Hilter plans for invading Great Britain from small coffehouse in Minehead, Somerset in England.

Sochi Olypmic facilities built on mass graves

Why is Greyhound trying to remove factual information about Russian genocide in Circassia and building of Sochi Olympic facilities on or near mass grave sites ? The Olympic facilities in Sochi are being built in areas that contain mass graves of Circassians that were killed during ethnic cleansing by Russia in military campaigns lasting from 1860 to 1864.[1] Circassian organizations in Russia and the Circassian diaspora around the world are asking to stop construction on the bones of the Circassians, and not to hold the Olympics on the place of the genocide. Georgia has recognized Circassian ethnic cleansing by Russia as Circassian Genocide. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.117.182.104 (talk) 18:20, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

The relevance of the S400 SAM comment?

Can someone explain to me how the inane comment by Russia's Air Force chief that an S-400 SAM could provide security for the 2014 Winter Olympics relevant to the actual security of the Sochi Winter Olympics? Since when is SAM deployment considered to be so important to the security of Winter Olympics that it merits a mention on the wikipedia article? Is there a mention of the type of SAM that was providing security cover during Vancouver or Salt Lake City games? How is SAM relevant to security of these games? Is there a valid concern of an air strike on Sochi by some foreign country during the Winter games? Russian politicians, specially those in the military, have a tendency to make odd, sensationalist, PR oriented comments that have little relevance. That doesn't mean they always need to be copied into wikipedia articles. So, I am thinking of removing this section of the article (just the S400 paragraph). Let me know what you think. I have not been able to find an official source listing the countries, there are however some sports (Ice hockey, curling, short track speed skating, figure skating, and biathlon) that have given official lists of qualified nocs. The big issue right now would appear to be the fis, they do not declare any skier as qualified, yet there is some entries on noc's pages indicating qualified skiers with no verification. There are some nations that have released statements indicating that their athlete has succeeded in qualifying, but the citation has been lost with frequent additions and subtractions of the list of nations.18abruce (talk) 03:17, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Concerns and controversies section

These sections appear in the articles for every Games. They tend to collect content provided by people obsessed with one of the "concerns and controversies" themselves, and it tends to be impossible to have a rational conversation with such people about the real significance of their own concern in the broader scheme of things. The section rarely adds anything to the article for the longer term. Every Olympic Games attracts people using them as a platform for their complaints, many of which have nothing to do with the Olympic movement or sporting competition.

As usual, this section is already attracting some seemingly minor, and strange additions. They won't add anything of interest to most readers. I wish such sections didn't exist, but that probably a forlorn hope.

Can I just ask all editors to be vigilant regarding content added to this section.

Totally agree with you.Jirka.h23 (talk) 22:02, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

The fact that President Obama is not attending the Games (not to mention the Presidents and Heads of State of other Countries), and instead, is sending a delegation including LGTB members, means there are indeed serious concerns and controversies that warrent coverage here.Josophie (talk) 19:54, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

In Concerns and controversies, it says:

the Financial Times reported, "... Sochi boycott, when no one boycotted the Beijing Olympics, could reinforce the Kremlin narrative that the west seeks constantly to undermine Russia. Far from driving a wedge between Mr Putin and Russians, it might consolidate his support among the majority."

This is not "reporting" by any stretch of the definition. The Financial Times article in question is behind a registration wall, but the quote pulled from the article is clearcut opining since it doesn't quote a third party and appears to be an opinion by the FT writer. Please change to:

the Financial Times opined, "... Sochi boycott, when no one boycotted the Beijing Olympics, could reinforce the Kremlin narrative that the west seeks constantly to undermine Russia. Far from driving a wedge between Mr Putin and Russians, it might consolidate his support among the majority."

--89.0.231.118 (talk) 21:15, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

  • Not done: The article says verbatim:

The Kremlin and its pliant Russian TV stations can, meanwhile, portray anyone making an issue of the law – the west, or domestic opposition – as fundamentally out of tune with the values of “ordinary” Russians. Ms Kichanova, the victim of the Moscow beating, happens also to be an opposition activist.

That means a Sochi boycott, when no one boycotted the Beijing Olympics, could reinforce the Kremlin narrative that the west seeks constantly to undermine Russia. Far from driving a wedge between Mr Putin and Russians, it might consolidate his support among the majority.

A better approach, as some gay athletes propose, is for foreign nations to attend. But, along with the IOC and Fifa – whose 2018 World Cup also takes place in Russia – they should use the games and intervening months to speak out against the anti-gay law and other illiberal measures. Pressure from western corporate sponsors, without whom the games might not be viable, could be effective too.

The most expensive games in history

For starters, do we really need a line that says these Games are "the most expensive games in history"? I suspect that almost all of them are. HiLo48 (talk) 21:12, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

HiLo48, please tone down. I am not prepared to discuss using this vocabulary. Especially given that you have a long history of incivility.--Ymblanter (talk) 22:04, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
There are far worse ways of being uncivil than using a couple of strong words. Misrepresenting other editors is a good start. Criticising them for not being aware of a claim of yours that you hadn't even posted, here or in the article, is another. Attacking someone for an alleged history, rather than discussing points made here, is a third. As I asked earlier, can you discuss this a little more sensibly, objectively, constructively and accurately please? HiLo48 (talk) 00:06, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
The statement that every games were the most expensive one in history is exactly equivalent to the statement then every games are more expensive than the previous ones. Concerning the five-fold statement, I saw it in zillions of sources, and this one is the first one which the Google search provides. May be if you are not aware of its existence you should have done some background check before attacking me. Moreover, if you still do such background check, you would find that everybody writes that corruption was widespread, and in Spring 2013, Putin finally noticed that all money have long gone (to his friends), and nothing has been constructed, and made a lot of noise in the news. This could provide you wth a slightly different perspective on what is the difference between the games held in an ordinary Western Democracy country, and games held in one of the most corrupt countries in the world (see e.g. Transparency International).--Ymblanter (talk) 06:42, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
In your rampant desire to prove the evilness of Putin, you must have missed my use of the word "almost". And, I haven't argued about whether the cost has increased five fold. I simply pointed out that such a claim wasn't even in the article, and I was attacked for not knowing about it! Putin may well be corrupt, but your logic and discussion skills won't prove it. HiLo48 (talk) 07:21, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
I am afraid, based on the past experience, our further discussion will be moved to ANI. You just can not learn to be civil. It would be also great to have other opinions.--Ymblanter (talk) 07:32, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

But this was mine sentenses and i have no problem with it, is the last part of it really so important for you and why? Jirka.h23 (talk) 22:12, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
I do not particularly care about the sentence, but without the criticism section the article mostly reflects Putin propaganda POV. Since there were a lot of reports in reliable sources of misuse of money etc, they should be in the article to keep it balanced.--Ymblanter (talk) 22:15, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
One would hope we use a lot more for our sources for general content in the article than "Putin propaganda POV". Clustering all the negatives in one criticism section makes such content look exactly like POV. HiLo48 (talk) 00:09, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Ah, now i see, you talk about the content in "Concerns and controversies" paragraph. Ok, then i am staying neutral, i do not mind it there.Jirka.h23 (talk) 07:14, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

What? Any chance we could discuss the topic here? In proper, coherent, English sentences? HiLo48 (talk) 10:58, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
As you can see, this sentence is there twice. I meant that it does not bother me in the "Concerns and controversies" paragraph.Jirka.h23 (talk) 18:41, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
That's still not very good English, so I am still unsure what you mean. And I've just realised something. Maybe English is not the first language of some of those editing here. Here is a very good graphics. The figures provided could be used for each article about the winter olympics. For instance the leap between Innsbruck 1964 and Grenoble 1968 is very impressive. 90.47.219.199 (talk) 22:41, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Current event temp

In preparation for the upcoming rush of edits, I added the current events template. Since "Olympic Games" is plural, the wording may seem awkward ("...documents a current Olympic Games" / "...documents a current Olympic Game"). Any thoughts on this? Or should the event parameter be dropped entirely and just show the default "...documents a current sports-related event"? Illneedasaviour (talk) 07:00, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Medal ceremonies in template

At medal plaza in the coastal cluster are every day medal ceremonies. They are listed in the calendar on the official website sochi2014.com, and the medal ceremonies are listed on the Vancouver 2010 calendar: Template:2010 Winter Olympics Calendar. Should they be added as well in the Template:2014 Winter Olympics Calendar? Sander.v.Ginkel (talk) 10:00, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

jihadist?

I'm not sure what would be a better alternative, but I am wondering if "jihadist", is a misleading term to include? Any thoughts? Sportfan5000 (talk) 01:11, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

You should suggest some "better alternative" then. OccultZone (Talk) 02:50, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
I'm trying to understand to which group the term is even referring to? Maybe it is jihadist but I don't see anything in the article to explain it? Sportfan5000 (talk) 02:57, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
Chechen insurgency. Yes it should be described in the article. OccultZone (Talk) 03:43, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
OK, thank you for that. i did find Insurgency in the North Caucasus which i added a link to, and the article does mention it. Thank you for clearing that up for me! Sportfan5000 (talk) 04:00, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 7 February 2014

The article makes it sound like Sochi is the only humid subtropical climate city ever to host the Olympic games when Turin hosted only 12 years ago. The wintertime temperatures between the two cities only differs by 1 or 2 degrees according to Wikipedia (although Sochi is very slightly warmer. Gtraber (talk) 17:59, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

I spotted an error with the "current sport" template. "Sports-related event" should be changed to "Winter Olympics". 166.170.33.133 (talk) 19:26, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Not done - I think you will find that the Winter Olympics is a "Sports related event" and is "current", so the use of a standard tag is entirely appropriate. Arjayay (talk) 19:37, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Afghanistan

Why is Afghanistan highlighted as green on the map yet it is not in the list? --MSalmon (talk) 22:06, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Is missing on the list. Afghanistan is making its Olympic Winter Games debut in Sochi.[7] --IIIraute (talk) 22:17, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Where they in the opening ceremony? --MSalmon (talk) 22:19, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
No, they were not. It appears to be an error on the part of the Sochi website, as they don't list any athletes. Additionally, there are no Afghan athletes listed as qualified in any sport. Ravendrop 22:24, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Are you sure? President Hamid Karzai was there. --IIIraute (talk) 22:25, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
If they were I must of missed them because I missed GBR (where I am from) --MSalmon (talk) 22:28, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
99.9% per cent sure. Karzai was there, but no evidence athletes were. Karzai was there as part of a diplomatic trip.Ravendrop 22:32, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

I love how my addition of the currentsport template earlier today was reverted... yes, it may have been a few hours early, but what difference does it make? It was going to be added anyways; I just happened to see that opportunity to place it myself. Nice to know how things work around here. Illneedasaviour (talk) 16:48, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Hopeless hijack

Does a failed (never likely to succeed) hijack by an incompetent druggie 1000 km from Sochi really belong in this article? HiLo48 (talk) 02:22, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

I am not familiar with the details, so I can't say for sure, but if you read the section just above it(specifically the first sentence and the last paragraph) it might be.--PLNR (talk) 02:27, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
I was thinking the same thing. I've had my share of inebriated pseudopolitical disturbances, and they generally don't go too far (though I'm possibly never allowed to visit Peru). This guy seems to have had something similar, aside from the "by the cockpit" part. That alone would draw media attention, but name-dropping Sochi in this particular cycle is a sure headline. Even when you don't mention Sochi at all, the news feels obligated to say "There was no apparent link to the Winter Olympics taking place in Sochi about 7,500km to the west. In the actual, factual world, he got as close to affecting the Olympics as I've gotten to Bustamante's grave. That is, 0% of the way. Sort of got his message out, but his message also didn't concern Sochi. I'm kicking him off the bandwagon. InedibleHulk (talk) 19:17, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Concerns and controversies

I think the current 'Concerns and controversies' focus too much on the safety and human rights of the LGBT community. You might want to see this article [8] I wouldn't call it WP:RS nor its language very neutral. However it does outline several additional issues and links to articles about them on the BBC and HRW, that can be used.

At the very least I suggest changing from the text from safety and human rights of the LGBT community, to safety and human rights in general and the LGBT community in particular. --PLNR (talk) 10:14, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

I agree.[9], [10]. It means w/e cracked's writer has written, it is not really incorrect. But then again, what type of lead you want it to be? Thanks OccultZone (Talk) 10:39, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
That second link is about the LGBT abuses. And Olympic protests over the anti-gay laws have been going on since June 2013. If anything we should increase the content to show the other human abuses, not decrease the coverage of the LGBT ones. Sportfan5000 (talk) 10:43, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Even better. What would be the title of section? If you are thinking about making one. OccultZone (Talk) 10:54, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, I have my hands full trying to finish Olympic-related stuff that should be done already! Sportfan5000 (talk) 12:40, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
How do the LGBT laws in Russia compare with the ones in Qatar ? 90.47.219.199 (talk) 14:09, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
What is your point? OccultZone (Talk) 17:23, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
I suggest looking at LGBT rights in Qatar. Sportfan5000 (talk) 22:58, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

I think this paragraph in Guardian provide a great summary:

"The multi-billion pound prestige projects for the Sochi winter Olympics contrast violently with the exploitation of workers engaged in Olympic construction; allegations of the illegal dumping of construction waste threatening residents' health and safety; evictions and displacement of residents to make way for Olympic venues; and harassment of environmental and human rights activists and journalists who criticise Olympic preparations or the government's anti-gay policy." [11]

It also supported by recent Human Rights Watch (HRW) reports and this[12] article provides a nice summary on each issue --PLNR (talk) 02:22, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure I could ever be comfortable with journalism that has things . HiLo48 (talk) 02:30, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Its called editorializing, obviously it shouldn't be present in the final version, The paragraph was brought as is(not as it should be in the article) because it does a great job of consistently cover the major issues involved.--PLNR (talk) 03:25, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
I have incorporated it into the leading paragraph, no violent contrasts ;) .--PLNR (talk) 09:46, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Concerning the second paragraph, I think that we should trim it down. According to the Guardian, the German president and EU commissioner has boycotted the games as well, on top if US, French, and Canadian figures who are already listed here, but IMO that list doesn't add much and shouldn't be part of this article scope, it should moved to the main article dealing with this and surmised here.--PLNR (talk) 09:46, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

PLNR, I must say, good job! Can be posted. OccultZone (Talk) 09:57, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Need separate article called "Events at the 2014 Winter Olympics"

Other Olympic games have analogous pages. Basically, there should be a way to quickly look up information on each event. Wikipedia is the only reliable source that gives competition format details and results together, and is very useful when following the games. The #sports extension only works on regular browsers, it does not work on mobile browsers or apps, so you have to search through the extensive main "2014 Winter Olympics" page to find the link to the events. Bookmarking does not help, as it reverts to the top of the page. Previous games have similar pages, so I don't think this request is out of line. 137.186.222.93 (talk) 07:12, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Are you looking for the Chronological summary of the 2014 Winter Olympics page? Is that the "similar pages" you are looking for? Zzyzx11 (talk) 15:59, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Warmest city to host a Winter Olympic Games

The article contains a statement for Sochi being the warmest city to host a Winter Olympic Games. The source is an interview of a well-known politican, who is in opposition and has an agenda. Now, the article lists that Sochi has a Cfa climate Humid_subtropical_climate - this is true. However, the following winter games were hosted in cities with the same Cfa climate - Lake Placid 1932_Winter_Olympics , Albertville 1992_Winter_Olympics , Nagano 1998_Winter_Olympics , Turin 2006_Winter_Olympics . Also, the Mountain cluster which is located in Krasnaya polyana, has Dwb climate Humid_continental_climate which is the coldest climate that is allowed for winter olympics. Shouldn't this statemet be corrected? Lelik (talk) 08:47, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Sochi location map

A few weeks ago, I came to this page looking for where Sochi was, and I didn't feel like the Russian map helped me. I am not familiar with looking at Russia from the North Pole, and I imagine most of the English-speaking world isn't either. I understand the Olympics are in Russia, but that doesn't seem to be quite a strong enough reason to put a Russian-only map. Sochi is a Black Sea resort, but in the Russian map, the Black Sea isn't even visible.

it is visible "zoom in" "the Black Sea" the Article is for the English-speaking world and the nations of the rest of the world Not only English-speaking world!!!--Cityinfonorns (talk) 06:31, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

So I kept looking to find Sochi's location. It seems to me that a view centered more along 20ish degrees N latitude (with Central/Western Asia, Europe and Central/Northern Africa) depicts the location better. Since Sochi is the focus of the map, I thought it'd be better a little closer to the center.

Cityinfonorns has reverted it back to the Russian map a couple of times in the last day or so (without an edit summary or reason). I wanted to bring it here for consensus. Is the mostly Russian map better or the one that provides the context of Central/Western Asia, Europe and Central/Northern Africa better as a locator for Sochi? Strafpeloton2 (talk) 03:22, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

  • First Map please. OccultZone (Talk) 18:20, 2 February 2014 03:53, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
  • I do prefer the second map (now third), as the first one - for most readers, I suspect - generates some confusion. I also do think Sochi should be located more central; i.e. rather in the center - than at the very edge of the map. However, maybe one could "zoom in" a little bit more (second map)?! --IIIraute (talk) 04:07, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
IIIraute is correct. Second map is great too, but it is really unclear whether Sochi is in Turkey or Russia. OccultZone (Talk) 18:20, 2 February 2014 04:56, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
I made a more zoomed in version of the second one. Strafpeloton2 (talk) 00:45, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
...that's much better - thank you. --IIIraute (talk) 00:50, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
I propose the use of three maps. The first map shows Russia in a round map of the hemisphere (including Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia). The second map shows Krasnodar Krai in Russia. with an arrow pointing to Krasnodar Krai because of its relatively small size. The third map shows Sochi in Krasnodar Krai.

zoom in the First Map The first map shows all Russia clear the second map Don’t the second map shows the Middle East Not Russia --Cityinfonorns (talk) 18:21, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
If we zoom in on the first map, part of Russia would be cropped out. The second map has part of Russia cropped out. It isn't clear to me what you're suggesting here. Strafpeloton2 (talk) 00:45, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
what part of Russia would be cropped out in the First Map--Cityinfonorns (talk) 01:03, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
In the first map, Russia (the white part) reaches all the way to the left of the map and almost all the way to the right; it reaches all the way to the top and almost all the way to the bottom. So any cropping would take out part of Russia. I'm with IIIraute (below) in that we don't need all of Russia to know where Sochi is. Strafpeloton2 (talk) 01:43, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

the second map shows the Middle East Not Russia--Cityinfonorns (talk) 01:05, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

The map is supposed to show the location of Sochi - not (the whole of) Russia, per se. Do we really need Kunashir Island on the map, to show the reader where Sochi is located? IMHO, the current map 3 is ok. --IIIraute (talk) 01:14, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Kunashir Island Not Russia the 3 map looks like Sochi is in Georgia!!!--Cityinfonorns (talk) 02:59, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Kunashir Island is controlled by Russia (and on the first map). Anyway - look: I guess for Russian or Turkish citizens the first map makes sense, however for most people from nations of the rest of the world, map no.1 is quite a difficult one. I think it also makes sense to show the proximity of Sochi to the rest of - i.e. being part of the European Continent, for example. --IIIraute (talk) 03:19, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Kunashir Island is occupied by Russia and not Russian Anyway people from nations of the rest of the world need to know where Sochi is in Russia not the Black Sea 2014 Winter Olympics is in Russia not the Black Sea--Cityinfonorns (talk) 03:59, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

I have added the other map (map 1) as a compromise settlement → [13]. --IIIraute (talk) 03:04, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

I like the idea that both maps are up on the article. It should allow the reader to find where Sochi is, no matter what their preference. --Super Goku V (talk) 04:31, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Whichever map is decided, there is no need for TWO maps side-by-side. Ive temporarily removedone. But whatever is decided can dsupercede this instead of having 2 showing the same thing. (and yes, the 2nd map DOES show Russia. Its clearly there. We don't need necessarily to indicate VladivostokLihaas (talk) 15:02, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Well, if there can only be one map, the the second map would be prefered as it clearly shows Sochi in relation to other countries in the area. The map of the whole of Russia is too much data to properly show the location. --Super Goku V (talk) 02:17, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
