Rainfall statistics

That sounds more than likely. There is a quote in the article saying three inches (75 mm) of rain fell in an hour. The average February rainfall in Funchal is 88.0 mm (3½ inches). If you look at the 2009 Jeddah floods, which occurred in a similar sort of situation (with rain falling on nearby higher ground and then being funnelled towards inhabited areas), the figure was given as 90 mm in four hours. It would be nice to have an official figure for the rainfall, I'll see what I can find. Physchim62 (talk) 22:42, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Second storm heading for Madeira and France

Hi. According to this blog entry, a second storm named "Xynthia", a European windstorm that developed in the central Atlantic Ocean and off the east coast of the US[1], is organizing and will hit France with the strength of a hurricane after passing through Madeira and dumping heavy rains, so it may be worthwhile to write an article on this as it passes through the northeast Atlantic region. Post-flooding write up

I just updated the article quite a bit to (hopefully) make more sense and be more readable. However, I wanted to add a section about "clean-up" or "post-flood", basically discussing things coming back to normal. I'm not really sure what to call it, however... thoughts? Possible Article Additions

I've uploaded a photo taken a few days after the mudslide, where it's emptying into the ocean here. Would this have any benefit to the article or with so little text we might not want to add another picture?

On another note, when I was in Funchal right after the mudslide, one of the causes I hear was due to the extreme landscaping that has been done on the island. For example, roads are cut through hillsides, houses are built on areas that are leveled off, etc. This is all anecdotal, but may be a good line of research to pursue further to see if there's any truth to this matter. --Robthepiper (talk) 04:51, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Needs update

"eight people still missing"?!! It's two years after this happened, there can't possibly still be people "missing". This needs to be updated with a recent source (the current source is from Feb 2010) and info about the fate of those people. Liam987 16:36, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
