Syamsurizal (born 25 June 1955) is an Indonesian politician who formerly served as 12th Bengkalis Regent from 2000 until 2010. He currently serving as a member of the House of Representatives from 2019, representing the Riau I electoral district. Syamsurizal is a member of the United Development Party and is currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Second Commission of the House of Representatives.

Early life[edit]

Syamsurizal was born on 25 June 1955, in Selat Panjang, Meranti Islands Regency, as the third child and son of the eight children of Aminah and Emir El Wahid.[1][2] He had two brothers, Ajbar and Nursyaruddin, and five sisters, Yenni Are, Ratna Dewi, Fatmawati, Genala Sari, and Rosmiati.[1] Syamsurizal attended elementary school at SD Negeri 1 Bengkalis from 1967 until 1970.[2] He then attended junior highschool at SMP Negeri 1 Bengkalis from 1970 until 1973 and highschool at SMA Negeri 1 Bengkalis from 1973 until 1976.[2] During highschool year, Syamsurizal served as Chair of Sports at the Student Council of SMA Negeri 1 Bengkalis from 1971 until 1973.[2] He then became a member of Student Representative Council from 1975 until 1977.[2] Syamsurizal later went to University of Riau majoring in business economics, and graduated in 1980, and earned his master's degree from Padjadjaran University majoring in human resource management, and graduated in 2000.[3][2] He earned his Ph.d from University of Malaya majoring in economy and administration in 2010.[3][2] During his college years, he served as Chairman of Student Representative Council from 1976 until 1979.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Syamsurizal is married to Fauziah Siregar on 16 September 1984.[1] They had two sons, Mohammad Batas Setiawan and Mohammad Akbar Almutaqin, and four daughters, Siti Khairani, Siti Mutiara Pertiwi, Siti Fitria Fatmala, and Siti Fitria Fatmila.[1]

Syamsurizal started his career by served as Head of Planning at the Riau Regional Revenue Service from 1983 until 1996.[2] He then served as Head of the Regional Revenue Service in Bengkalis Regency from 1997 until 1999, followed by serving as Head of Riau Financial Bureau from 1999 until 2000.[4][2] He then served as Regent of Bengkalis from 2000 until 2005 and was appointed again, and served from 2005 until 2010.[4][2] Syamsurizal also serving as Chairman of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Sepak Takraw Association from 2004.[3]

In 2006, Syamsurizal was appointed as Chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia in Bengkalis.[3] He was also appointed as Vice President of Asian Sepak Takraw Federation and Vice President of International Sepak Takraw Federation, in 2007, and was then appointed as the World Sepak Takraw Ambassador by the International Sepak Takraw Federation on the same year and served until 2012.[3] In 2010, Syamsurizal was appointed as Staff at the Research and Development Agency.[2] He then served as Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Economic Scholars in Bengkalis and Chairman of the Indonesian Crime Prevention Institute, in 2011.[3]

In 2011, Syamsurizal was appointed as acting mayor of Pekanbaru.[4] He was also appointed as Chairman of the Riau Government Inspectorate in the same year and then served as Chairman of the Grand Committee at National Sports Week in 2012.[4] In 2013, Syamsurizal was appointed as Chair of the Islamic Solidarity Games Regional Committee. He continued to served as Expert Staff for Community and Human Resources at the Regional Secretariat of Riau.

In 2014, Syamsurizal was appointed as Expert Staff to the Governor of Riau.[2] In 2015, he was appointed as Council Secretariat in the House of Representatives in Riau. Syamsurizal was also appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Central Leadership Council of the National Mandate Party in Riau, in 2018.[3] He then served as Council Secretariat in the House of Representatives in Riau.[4] In 2019, Syamsurizal was appointed as member of House of Representatives and served until 2024.[4] He then became a member of the state civil service law revision committee and served as Vice Chairman of the Second Commission of the House of Representatives of Indonesia.[4][5]

In 2024, Syamsurizal ran for election of members of House of Representatives representing Riau.[2]

Controversy[edit]

In April 2009, Syamsurizal daughter's, Siti Khairani, marriage was highlighted by public due to being held luxuriously and did not invite the Deputy Regent of Bengkalis.[6] Executive Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency, Institute for Inventory & Salvage of State Money, Abdul Rahman, said that Syamsurizal's reason for not inviting the Deputy Regent of Bengkalis was because the two of them did not getting along.[6] In 2011, during his tenure as Mayor of Pekanbaru, Syamsurizal transferred 51 sub-district and village heads, resulted in criticism due to be considered legally flawed and motivated by political matters.[7] He was then reprimanded by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Gamawan Fauzi, which make him carried out an evaluation of the policy.[7]

In 2014, Syamsurizal was named by journalist as a controversial official.[8] Feeling insulted, he then sued Head of Public Relations Bureau of the Riau Provincial Secretariat, Fahmizal Usman, and threatened to report him to the governor to remove him from his position.[8]
