19th century[edit]
- 1868 – The Atchison and Pike's Peak Railroad opens between Atchison and Waterville, Kansas.[1]
- 1870 – The Elizabeth City and Norfolk Railroad, which later became the original Norfolk Southern Railroad, is chartered to build a railroad line between Norfolk, Virginia, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
20th century[edit]
- 1903 – The Grand Trunk Western Railroad opens a passenger depot in Lansing, Michigan.
- 1951 – Canadian Pacific Railway's eastbound The Dominion passenger train hits a truck at a level crossing in Ottawa; most of the train remains on the rails, but the engineer is fatally burned in the derailment.[2]
- 1954 – The Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line, the second line in the system and the first built after World War II, is opened between Ikebukuro and Ochanomizu stations.
- 1960 – The Cartier Railway opens Canada's northernmost railway to date between Port Cartier and Gagnon, Quebec.[3]
21st century[edit]
- 2007 – Line 2 of the Bilbao metro is extended with the opening of Portugalete station and Abatxolo station.
