- 1830 - Philippe de La Harpe was born in Paudex, Switzerland.
- 1836 - The crew of the HMS Beagle, carrying Charles Darwin on its second voyage, began to survey a coral atoll in the Keeling Islands to investigate how coral reefs formed.
- 1939 - Adolf Carl Noé died at age 65.
- 2015 - John M. Rensberger and Ricardo N. Martínez found that both birds and lizard-hipped dinosaurs have bone cells with very high surface areas, which may have contributed to the former's ability to reach large size with high growth rates.
