Irish (Gaeilge), a Goidelic language spoken in Ireland, is constitutionally recognised as the first official language of the Republic of Ireland and has official recognition in Northern Ireland as well. European Union foreign ministers have unanimously decided to make Irish an official language of the European Union, beginning in 2007. There are approximately 1.6 million Irish speakers.
