Amman is the capital and largest city of Jordan, with a population of over 4 million. The area the city is on has been inhabited since at least the eighth century BCE. The Romans and Greeks controlled the ancient city before its capture by the Rashidun army in 630 AD to The city was then abandoned for years during the middle ages, and the modern city dates from the 19th century.

Being the seat of government, Amman features a number of important institutions including The Jordan Museum and the University of Jordan.

Zarqa is the second-largest city in Jordan. Known as the blue city, around 635,000 people live in the city. Zarqa is also known for its military bases and being the base of the Arab Legion, which was the Transjordanian army force during Jordan's British Protectorate days.

Irbid is the second-largest metropolitan area and Jordan and third-largest city. With a population of over 1.7 million in the metro area, Irbid is the capital of the Irbid Governorate. It is known for its several institutions of higher education in the city, including Jordan University of Science and Technology, Yarmouk University, and Irbid National University. Being in the far north of the country, Irbid also is an important ground transportation hub connecting Jordan with Syria.

Aqaba is the thirteenth-largest city in Jordan and the administrative centre of Aqaba Governorate with a population of around 150,000. With its location on the Gulf of Aqaba, Aqaba is the only coastal city in Jordan, and its proximity to the ruins of Petra has made it a major tourist destination. However being Jordan's only seaport Aqaba is also known for its industry, especially its copper mines, and the city has its own development authority, the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority.
