June 30[edit]

  • Sen.Piedad Córdoba who came to New York to participate in the celebrations of the Independence of Venezuela in Manhattan, was questioned in the airport by the New York authorities for three hours. The Senator, which has been related to the Humanitarian exchange with the FARC guerrilla, was annoyed with the event, while the Colombian Embassy expressed its solidarity.
  • Spain won the UEFA Euro 2008.
  • Cartagena de Indias prepared the visit of John McCain, the presidential candidate of United States to that city next week. McCain will meet President Álvaro Uribe and Colombian enterprisers.
  • Another confession of atrocities by a former Paramilitary leader, José de Jesús Pérez Jiménez, known as “Sancocho”, affected directly the Aborigine peoples of Cauca State and several farmers. Pérez confessed that as a commander of the Calima Troops of the Self-defense Paramilitary groups of Cauca, he leaded the killing of more than 2 thousand persons looking for guerrilla people. Many of the persons killed by the Pérez group were not related to guerrillas at all, the same man confessed in a Court in Medellín.
  • The Colombian government will not send a note of protest to Quito for the words of President Rafael Correa who used strong words to referrer to President Álvaro Uribe saying that he does not intend to reestablish relations with Colombia as long as Uribe is the President. Correa did not want to meet with the delegation of the Carter Foundation that is trying to encourage a dialogue among the two Andean nations. Instead a note of protest, Bogotá will send a report to the Organization of American States.
