Illustration from the poem, 'Pearl', showing the author as the father (left)

The 14th-century author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl, among other poems, wrote in the Cheshire dialect. He is believed to have been a native of east Cheshire or west Staffordshire, perhaps a member of the Massey family. This illustration from the Pearl manuscript shows the author (left) in the role of the father.
