"Play" (我呸) is a song by Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai (蔡依林), recorded on Jolin 's 13th original studio album "Play" (呸). The song was composed by Nese Ni (倪子岡), written by Katie Lee (Hsia Yu) and produced by Starr Chen (陳星翰).[1] The song was released on October 27, 2014, as the first single from the album "Play" by Warner Music Taiwan and Eternal Music Production (凌時差音樂).[2] The song and its music video were shortlisted for Best Song of the Year and Best Music Video at the 26th Golden Melody Awards, Nese Ni and Starr Chen were shortlisted for Best Arranger for the song, and Starr Chen was shortlisted for Best Single Producer for the song.[3]

Background and release[edit]

On April 13, 2013, Jolin Tsai ended her 3rd tour, "Myself World Tour", while preparing for her new album.[4] On July 25 of the same year, Jolin Tsai traveled to London, England to begin a month-long course in music, dance and acting.[5] On November 22, Jolin Tsai revealed that her new album "is still in the stage of collecting songs, and is slowly moving forward.[6]

On January 29, 2014, the media revealed that Jolin Tsai would take full control of her new album, which would likely be a cross-country collaboration and would cost more than NT$50 million to produce,[7] and on April 4, the media indicated that Jolin Tsai's new album was expected to be released in the summer of the same year.[8] On September 5 of the same year, Jolin revealed that her new album was "almost finished" and would be released by the end of the same year.[9]

On October 27 of the same year, Jolin released the single "Play".[10] On January 6, 2015, the song was ranked No. 1 on Hit FM Taiwan's Top 100 Singles of 2014, making Jolin Tsai one of the two singers with the most No. 1 hits on the list.[11]

On October 28, 2014, Jolin Tsai released the lyrics version of her song "Play",[10] and on November 2 of the same year, Jolin Tsai released the official music video for the song and held a campaign for the music video at the National Taiwan Museum in Taipei City, Taiwan.[12] The music video was directed by Muh Chen (陳奕仁) and cost over NT$8 million to shoot. On the 8th of the same month,[13] Jolin Tsai released the dance version of the song.

The music video was ranked No. 1 on YinYueTai's weekly V-chart and No. 1 on QQ Music's weekly Chinese music video chart,[14] and won the No. 1 spot on the 2014 Taiwan YouTube Hottest Music Video Viewing Chart.[15] The music video was also highly praised by international media such as Time Magazine[16] and GQ Magazine.[17] The music video was shortlisted for the Best Art Direction Award at the 2016 Berlin Music Video Awards,[18] and won the Visual Communication Design Award at the 2015 Red Dot Design Awards and the 2016 Golden Dot Design Award[19][20]
