Established in 2015 by the Government of India, the Indian Institute of Management Sirmaur (IIM Sirmaur) stands as a centrally funded institution of national significance. Positioned among the newer members of the esteemed IIM consortium, IIM Sirmaur operates under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. With a mission to deliver top-notch management education, it also champions the advancement of related fields and interdisciplinary studies. It has been recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India in 2017.

The institute conducts a full range of academic activities in the field of management education covering research, teaching, training, consulting and intellectual infrastructure development. The institute emphasises the development of analytical skills and a focus on global and cross-cultural issues with a balance between business demands and social concerns.

History[edit]

IIM Sirmaur was founded in 2015.[1] The institution started the first batch of its Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in management from 4 September 2015. The institute has started groundwork for its activities under the guidance and mentorship of the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow.[2]

Campus[edit]

IIM Sirmaur's vibrant campus, located at Dhaula Kuan in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, was established amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On August 15, 2014, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh announced the selection of Dhaula Kuan for the institute, emphasizing its potential to uplift the region's socio-economic landscape. Spanning 210 acres, the campus is strategically situated along the Ambala-Dehradun National Highway No. 72, with easy access to transportation hubs like Chandigarh and Dehradun airports. Development commenced with a budget of Rs. 392.51 crores approved by the Government of India for Phase-I construction, targeting facilities for 600 students.

The campus boasts universal accessibility, featuring ramps, lifts, and spacious walkways. It aims to accommodate diverse needs with amenities like gender-segregated hostels, sports facilities, and a well-equipped health center.

The academic block comprises classrooms, a library, computer center, faculty building, and a 500-seater auditorium. Administrative facilities include offices for the director and deans, meeting rooms, and administrative support spaces.

Expected to welcome students in the 2024-25 academic year, IIM Sirmaur's permanent campus embodies the vision of a world-class institution, blending modern infrastructure with Himachal Pradesh's cultural essence.[3]

The temporary campus of IIM Sirmaur was at Himachal Institute of Technology, Paonta Sahib, Sirmaur. Paonta Sahib is an industrial town in the south of Sirmaur district and is well connected to Dehradun, Chandigarh, Shimla, Delhi, etc.[4] National Highway 7 passes through the town. Two hundred acres of land has been acquired in Dhaula Kuan for the permanent campus of the institute.

Library[edit]

The institute views its library as a vital hub where students and faculty actively engage in the consumption and creation of knowledge. To align with its ambition of becoming a premier management institution, IIM Sirmaur is dedicated to establishing a cutting-edge library.

Equipped with a diverse array of print and electronic resources, the library houses an extensive collection of e-books, e-journals, and online databases. Additionally, it features a Bloomberg terminal for real-time financial data access. Designed spaciously and furnished with ergonomic furniture, the library ensures a conducive environment for study and research. Managed by a team of diligent professionals, it caters to the information needs of both faculty members and students.

E-Books and Print Books: The library offers access to over 190,000 e-books through 'ProQuest E-Book Central', supplemented by a substantial collection of print books covering management and related subjects.

Print and E-Journals, Online Databases: Subscribed to a wide range of print and e-journals, the library also provides access to various online databases. Registered users can seamlessly explore these resources via the institute's intranet.

Organisation and administration[edit]

Dr. Prafulla Agnihotri, Professor of Marketing & Strategy, has assumed the role of Director at IIM Sirmaur starting May 17, 2022. He succeeds Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, who completed her tenure as the founding Director.

Dr. Agnihotri holds a Master’s Degree in Management Studies (M.M.S.) from the University of Mumbai and earned his Ph.D. in International Marketing Strategy from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. Prior to his appointment at IIM Sirmaur, he held the position of Professor of Marketing at IIM Calcutta and served as the founding Director of IIM Trichy.[5]

With over thirty years of combined industry experience in sales, marketing, training, and academia, Dr. Agnihotri has also contributed as a visiting faculty at Euromed, Marseille Provence, and CERAM, Sophia Antipolis, France. He is a co-author of the book "Principles of Marketing" with Philip Kotler and Gary Armstrong.

Expressing his vision for IIM Sirmaur, Prof. Agnihotri aims to elevate the institution's stature among the top 15 B-Schools in India according to NIRF rankings within the next five years, while simultaneously enhancing its academic and research excellence.

Academics[edit]

The institute offers both full-time (MBA and MBA in Tourism Management) and executive (EMBA and EMBA in Digital Transformation and Analytics) Master's degrees. Their doctoral program provides opportunities for in-depth research. They combine traditional classroom instruction with case studies, interactive discussions, and practical industry experiences.[6] The curriculum leverages simulations, workshops, and real-world projects to ensure students develop a comprehensive understanding of complex business issues.

Students are encouraged to participate in research, independent projects, and dissertations. This focus on analysis and problem-solving prepares graduates to tackle real-world challenges. Since the IIM Act, they have been offering the Master of Business Administration degree. This is a two-year, regular, full-time residential programme. Admission to the MBA course of IIM Sirmaur is conducted each year through Common Admission Test (CAT).
