Glór na nGael (Irish pronunciation: [ˈɡl̪ˠoːɾˠ n̪ˠə ˈŋeːl̪ˠ]; "voice of the Gaels") is one of the Irish-language lead organisation funded by Foras na Gaeilge which promotes and supports Irish in three sectors: the family, community development, and business. It was established as an Irish language community group competition[1] in 1961, and Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich and Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta were among its founders.

Comórtas Ghlór na nGael[edit]

The competition has grown and evolved substantially over the years to now include a prize fund of over €80,000 with themes encompassing many aspects of community life. There is also an extensive list of special awards on an annual basis.[2] Glór na nGael’s adjudication groups visit each committee towards the end of the year to access the progress made and award marks towards the competition. A written report is provided to each committee detailing their progress and providing any further advice or recommendations.

Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha[edit]

Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha ("Joe McDonagh Foundation" in English) is a support scheme[5] of Gaelic Athletic Association and Glór na nGael aimed at GAA clubs that are active in the promotion of the Irish language.[6] This scheme is administered by Glór na nGael in collaboration with the GAA National Committee.

The Foundation was established in honor of Joe McDonagh. He achieved the highest position in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael. As a hurler, he took the Carthage Cup back over Shannon and was chief executive, and chairman, of some of the major organizations in this country, including Foras na Gaeilge.

The purpose of this foundation is to recognise that work, and to give clubs the opportunity to develop that work, on a measured and planned basis. Bronze, silver and gold medals are awarded to clubs at the end of the year – depending on the number of goals set by the Foundation that clubs have achieved.

Irish Language Games[edit]

Glór na nGael is the Irish publisher of the Scrabble[7] and Junior Scrabble[8] word games,[9] and in 2015 it also published the Irish-language version of the Monopoly[10] board game. Most recently is has published the Irish language version of Cluedo.[11]
