Notes
  • Significance: Lawrence Halprin designed the Sculpture Garden at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 1976. The garden is representative of Halprin's organic, free flowing, romantic people spaces that owe everything to the lessons of nature and the needs of the 20th century user. The fountain is modeled after waterfalls in Northern Virginia and the walkways and topography drawn from woodland paths. The Sculpture Garden shares many of the same qualities and details as Halprin's Portland Plazas designed in 1965-66.
  • Survey number: HALS VA-1
  • Building/structure dates: 1976 Initial Construction
