Description
Porcelain vase in gourd form decorated in underglaze blue, with later silver mount. Ming dynasty, Chongzhen period (1628-44). Although the vase was clearly exported, as the Western mount added to conceal damage to the neck demonstrates, it has a lively decoration taken from Chinese literature. This depicts the “Battle of Mount Bowang”, Chapter 39 in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The hero Liu Bei, brilliant politician and leader who founded the state of Shu Han in 221, set troops to ambush his enemies. He also torched his surroundings, and strong winds helped to spread the fire so that the enemy troops panicked and stumbled as they attempted to flee. On the vase, a soldier on horseback gallops towards Mount Bowang with troops behind him carrying flaming torches, and at the rear is seen Liu Bei urging his horse upwards with a whip.
